Returned my 970 for a 980 before starting this game and found that the game-play is not silky smooth as I was expecting it to be after so many patches. Its completely playable but the occasional stutter/jerkiness/frame drops(?). It's disheartening considering I have the 'best single GPU' out there. I use Nvidia optimal settings at 1080p.

Can users let me know of their experience with this game after the recent patches?

I played the game at 1200p. Everything maxed with 2xTXAA with a 970.

Try that.

Also keep drivers up to date.

Yes drivers are up to date.

The stutters occur every time my FPS drops below 60. I found changing Soft Shadows to Ultra has been really helpful with the drops occurring far less regularly. I'm surprised I can't use Soft Shadows with a 980...

I don't know how this game got released, never-mind bundled with the 900 series as a show off game for the new tech. So poorly optimised it's a joke!

I feel many people will be in the same boat. returning a 970 for a 980 or a 290X/290 and having the same or similar issues that they got with the 970 and switching didn't solve it. The game just isn't a fair representation of smooth gaming at any level and requires workarounds to get close to acceptable. There is a few games like that of late (mostly from UBIsoft) and this led to many jumping ship from the 970.

No help to you OP sorry but hopefully in time it will get fixed but don't hold your breath, as FarCry 3 is still a stutter mess for me :(

To be fair I didn't return my 970 because I was experiencing issues. In fact I played through Far Cry 3 on my 970 and that ran mostly well. I just didn't expect the 980 to perform so poorly with the Nvidia settings.

Anyway I found that changing HBAO+ to SSBC and Soft Shadows to Ultra makes for the best experience. I can't wait to get a GSync monitor... just waiting on a 32 inch monitor to come out. Having to use VSync is the only reason I drop below 60FPS in the first place.

Tbh on medium settings on my 670 I'm not getting any of these stutters that many seem to be getting

My PC is golden :D

The stutter is related to something to do with texture compression IIRC, can either lower textures,or go into the game INI mess about with the mipmapping settings.

Did they ever patch out the inherent mouse acceleration?

Not sure I use an Xbox 360 controller.

I tested out some Shadow of Mordor and Far Cry 3, both of which ran nicely on my 970. Both are also buttery smooth on my 980 and in FC3 I can even increase MSAA to x8 from x4 without dropping 60FPS which is pretty cool.

Just going to put it down to FC4 poor optimisation/porting. That said, using the settings I found made it a pretty good experience in terms of a smooth 60FPS experience so I can't complain too much.

you wont get FC 4 working right, it'll only work slightly better if you kill its settings, you have to reduce its shadows by quite a lot.

Dieing Light is perfect so this is definitely a screwed up game only.

I've got a Swift and Far Cry 4 is still a stuttery mess for me, an utter joke.

Make sure the games patched to the latest version (Possibly 1.7 off the top of my head) makes allot of difference on this one

*edit* sorry that should be 1.8
