Looking to upgrade my GTX 980 for something newer. Just about to purchase a 27" 1440P monitor and need something to be able to cope with gaming on it. Would probably be looking to spend approx. £250 or so but if I can spend less that would be a bonus

Cheers

I have an RTX 2070 which has been overclocked and it's a beast! Went up from an 980 SC :D

<-- 27" 1440p too

Will you get one for £250 ?

It All depends on what games you play and at 1440p will be more demanding.

1660 super is good 1080p card at £210 with some 1440p gaming dependent in title, for £250 the 5600xt is a good choice.

5700xt is what you want for 1440p, but that's another £100.

What sort of games do you want to play?

I play mainly FPS games but would like it ideally to let me play most type of games at good quality for a couple of years without needing to upgrade

Just get the best gpu you can afford, there is always the second hand market or refurbished , but it comes with risk.

I'd wait seeing as new cards aren't that far off. If you can't wait then I'd try and increase your budget and aim for something like a 5700XT or 2070 (or thereabouts).

What refresh rate is the monitor?

If you can get a 2070 for £250, get that. Doubt you can mind.

Option to sell your 980? If its boxed with all parts and a good brand you can add £100 to your budget

If you go second hand. Hold off a month or so if you can. Should be a load more cards coming up for sale with 3000 series launch.
A month or so. I thought prices havent even been released yet for 3000 series, only speculation?

You could be waiting a month, 3 or 6. Personaly opinion would be to sell the 980 if its in good condition and add £100 to the budget.
£250 would get you a B grade 1660 Super which I doubt is much better than your 980. Maybe 10% faster.
How much was your 980 out of interest, i'm sure they were more than £250 new. Not that that has anything to do with your upgrade but GPUs get more expensive over the years

Release of the 3000 series is in just over a week.

The 5600xt would be a good choice. Some of them are a good bit under 300. There’s a Gigabyte one for 260 on prime next day.
Second hand Vega64 is good too. They can overclock through the roof and almost catch a stock 5700xt.
