GTX 980Ti clock speeds

Hey all, just wondering if anyone could explain what's up with the clock speeds I'm getting using an EVGA GeForce GTX 980Ti Hydro Copper.

The clocks as advertised are:
- Core Base Clock: 1140MHz
- Core Boost Clock: 1228MHz
- Memory Clock: 7010MHz

But after an hour or 2 playing GTA V with everything on ultra, the max clocks I'm recording (using GPU-Z) are:
- Core: 1530MHz :eek::D
- Memory: 3505MHz :eek::mad:

Now I'm obviously more than happy with (although slightly confused by) the core clock, but I'm struggling to understand why the memory clock is reading so low. Any ideas? Faulty card? Cheers guys!
 
You need to double the memory clock as it is displayed in gpu-z. 2 x 3505=7010mhz, DDR stands for double data rate.
 
For the core it's nvidia boost 2.0 stuff. When there is thermal and voltage margin it will overclock. Being under water will give you a nice boost.

Awesome, cheers guys, even if I do feel extremely stupid having made the same balls-up many times in the past re RAM speeds! Was very impressed with the core clocks tbh, was expecting a slight improvement to maybe 1300MHz because of the decent cooling but 1530MHz was far more than expected :D
 
1530 is a sweet clock, have never seen a card boosting to this by itself, did the card do this or have you manually overclocked it with Precision or similar? If not have you already tried what the card can by manually pushing it to the limit? Just curious :)

Not overclocked it at all, this is with completely standard settings! Just checked out the reviews for the card on OcUK and one of the guys who left a review on there was getting 1512MHz with everything left stock... Might be time to up the advertised speeds ;) Not tried pushing it at all yet, but as it's only reaching a max of 42°C on GTA V with everything on Ultra it will definitely be getting a bit more abuse in the near future :D
 
I'm more than happy with it, first time I've used an EVGA card and I originally went with it (and the PSU) because of comments on here regarding how good your customer service is. Will try pushing it a bit harder over the weekend if I get a bit of spare time, see what it can really do :D One thing I was wondering though, how do card makers come up with the advertised speeds when pretty much every card will be slightly different? Do you bench test a load of cards and take an average, or is it more scientific than that? Cheers :)
 
It's depending on the OC. A mild one like on a SC card is not that difficult if you use good components.. Cards with massive overclock sometimes get pretested with the heavy OC to make sure there is no issue. In the US we do also offer cards with EVGA Design like a Classy card with Reference clockspeeds, those are cards that can not hold the massive clock with Ref voltage. The higher the factory overclock is the more likely it is the cards need special treading to make sure it can hold what we advertise

What ASIC quality does your card show in GPU-Z?

Not got it running atm (on my work PC) but will give it a look in the morning for you :)
 
Just checked the ASIC quality on GPU-Z and it's 69.0%. Not sure if this is good, bad, indifferent or irrelevant as I don't know what it tests, but that's the result anyways :D
 
Thanks for the update. The ASIC gives information about the power the chip do loose. The higher the number less power get lost but at the end of the day the number do not say much about the quality of a chip like your card, 70% is about the avarage and in the middle but the chip is still an excellent overclocker and probably one of the best.

I have a couple of your 980 Ti cards with 82.3% and 82.7% ASIC and they overclock like beasts on stock volts.:D:)
