Well I was just about to click the order button for my new system when I read how well Crossfire was doing at the moment.

I was going to order an 8800GTX to go with my new 24" Dell (1920x1200) as it's got that extra power over a GTS at high res. BUT I then thought that maybe a Crossfire system might run better, seeing as the P35 boards almost all run crossfire as standard. I've tried finding benchmarks etc for the 3850's and 3870's in xfire but not many of them go as far as the res I'll need and what do benchmarks matter when I'll be gaming not benching anyways? ;)

I know that 2 3870's would probably cost more than a single GTX but if it's going to be better then I dont mind buying one card this month then another next month.

It'll all be combined with a Q6600 and 4GB RAM on either an OCUK IP35 or ASUS P5K-E board, depending what I can stretch to.

2x3870 will give you the theoretical performance that QUAD SLI would have provided - but never did - 1x3870 is similiar performance to a 7950GX2 (and a bit faster in shader heavy games like crysis) while 2x3870 will give you very respectable performance, I'd personally rather spend the money on 2x 8800GT (or GTS if you have a fast rig) as they should take you to the performance limit of the rest of your system, unless you have something insane like a 4+gig core 2 quad.

would something like 3870xt's in crossfire be wasted at low res like 12x10, 14x9 etc? It doesnt seem that way in crysis as the thread with the benchmarking stuff, the 3870 CF are better than ultras at 12x10.

Well that was my intention :D I'd be disappointed with anything less than 3.6ghz tbh

I had considered the 2 88gt's but then I'd need an SLI board, which cost a fortune and I've heard of stability issues with them. An then there's the whole issue of gt's and high res and sli having naff drivers for most games etc. I've got sli before (7800gt's) and I wasn't that impressed.

i can get 2 3870s for £260 which is just over the price of the cheapest GTX, its just something i was considering, but i would be playing at low res.

Those youtube vids look quality 2x 3870s definatly look better then a single GTX, but I feel if u wait till Feb we will have 2 more new cards that are proberly gonna be faster and better.

Thats when im waiting anyhow:)
