Hi all

is it worth buying a GTX260 at the moment?

i can get a brand new sealed GTX260 216 for £95.

for the next few weeks il be playing at 1280 x 1024 but after will be moving to a 26" monitor.

So is it worth it would you say? or wait for the new ati cards to get more performance for the same price?

cheers

A GTX 260 will tear that game to shreads.

I am contemplating getting a second one for my system for SLi.

It's not worth it, wait for the new ATi cards. Even if you don't buy one, it'll at least push the prices of the current cards right down.

Do not listen to this guy,
that card will not shred modern warfare 2. not at high settings it wont
and also the game isnt released yet and no one knows, so i dont know where this guy is getting his information from

and i can bet from checking out the HD trailers that, that card wont run it at max
single 4890 will be a better match imho than a 260.

Tha's not really true though is it?

MW 2 runs on the same/similar engine as either MW or WAW (can't remember) and my clocked GTX 260 can easily max both games at 1920x1200 with 4xAA etc and maintain a good average FPS over 60 and a min that sometimes dips into the 40s (WAW) only :) Granted a 4890 will far better, but you're selling the GTX 260 short.

Same engine doesn't always mean same performance. Also, as far as I'm aware, isn't the engine a built up version of the Quake II engine? Quake II flies on current hardware, I doubt MW 2 will in the same way.

I doubt a GTX260 will fall to its knees of course, but I don't think it would 'tear it up'.

Single 260GTX tears through COD4... so it will be perfectly adequate for MW2...

Even an 8800GT tears up COD4 at max settings aslong as you leave the resolution at 1680x or below - once you hit 1920x you start to see dips below 60fps - aslow as ~40fps - tho it will still average ~80fps.

If you can get one at that price I'd say go for it...

COD4's engine is built on a heavily modified idtech3 (quake3) engine... but the renderer has been ported to d3d9.

COD seems to be one of those games that thrives on being able to run on older gcards hence its popularity. In that respect, I'm sure the GTX260 will run MW2 fine. It certainly tears through the original MW and seeing as the engine is based on the that, as Happy said, it should run well.

Then again, it hasn't been released yet so anything said here is mere speculation.

I ran cod4 at 1920x1200 using a 512mb 8800gts and it coped admirably with it, a few dips to 40fps here and there, i cant see a gtx 260 struggling much with mw2

Most people try and claim its built on the Unreal 3 engine :(

I find I can tell when a game is built on the UE3. Games made with it just seem to have a certain 'look' about them.

Not a negative thing, as I really like the UE3 looks.

hmmm... I thought World at War used the same engine as COD4. just like the James Bond: Quantum of Solace game.

EDIT: The developer has stated that the game's proprietary IW 4.0 game engine is an improvement over the engine used in its previous game. [quoted from the wikipedia MW2 page]

Yeah the engine has better texture/shader support i.e. streaming, higher quality lighting and better physics... its still built ontop of the same engine tho.

As I was saying, this card is extremely economical for the FPS you get.

Ofc, depends on the resolution you are playing at.

Yes, a GTX 260 216 will "shred" the game.....

However at 1920x1080 and above I recommend waiting for the next gen cards or getting a 4890 or similar.

at the core its still a modified and tweaked to hell quake3/idtech3 engine , and remember on the consoles its only going to be running at 600p so anything above a 8800 GTX level of card level will be plenty I reckon , heck i was playing it on this rig with a overclocked 2900 pro at 1920x1200 just fine :) with no AA or AF though ,with no OC on that old card it did stress out in the more manic moments

but as others have said wait abit since there new cards out next month

You all seem to be forgetting the game multiplatform, so is designed to run on a xbox and then is given higher textures and what not for the pc release. So any Mid-High end gfx card should run it, and probably run it well.
