Tidying loft out........found pc mags from mid-late 90's

Matrox Millenium AGP card £279, mindst it was the retailed boxed 4Mb version lol ;)

I'd guess that £279 equates to arround £350 to £400 adjusted for inflation

My first PCW magazine has the "First glimpse of the PS2" or something on it. Always get a kick when I see that cover. ZOMG Pentium 4 is just around the corner! 1GHz processors are on the way!!

I think everything was a little more exciting back then.

Things were much simplier back then too. When I built my first PC there was a choice between the Voodoo 2 or Voodoo 3... or the TNT2 and TNT2 Ultra

That was it. No low range, mid range, high range, even higher range, silly money range like there is today.

My first bought, not put together pc, was a pentium 66Mhz (which needed 5.25v to run ) with 8mb of ram, 850mb hard drive, 15" screen, a Tseung Labs 1mb graphics card, hardware cache hard drive controller with 2mb on board ram, 3 x NEC cd rom drive.

Total cost £1700 + VAT  I reckon with inflation that would be £4000 in todays money (I had lots more disposable income back then :()

I remember my dad buying a PC when i was 18, and he kindly bought me an identical one which pretty much sealed my love for PCS. It was about 2 grand, and was a 486 DX250, 14" monitor, 2x CD Rom, 8mb ram (i think), 256mb hard disk (i think), no soundcard!

My dad works as an IT manager so we inevitably ended up with 2nd hand computers that were always just behind the times though each time he got a new laptop it was something else again.. I still remember the first colour laptop he had. Wow.. like 2 inches thick :)

My first proper PC was a 166mhz Pentium with SSE!! Can't remember what size harddrive. Got an 8mb S3 Savage to go with it when I got.. I think it was IL2, couldn't have been though, IL2 isn't that old. I think I got an ATi 7500 when IL2 came out. The S3 was for another game I had that needed a graphics card.

It all seems so long ago :(

I paid £300 for a GeForce2 Ultra when I was 16.

I was the most uber person on the entire internet. Well, I thought that, anyway.

I remember selling UPA Creator 3D card to some guy for £550 back in a day. Was quite annoyed as well, as it was a serious cash in hand bargain, but needed money badly at the time.

Also, I paid £169 for Yamaha daughter card for my Soundblaster 16. It was a choice between new IKEA bed or daughter card. Obvious choice. Made Tie Fighter background score sound like Tangerine Dream.

What's Tangerine Dream? What's daughter card... ;)

But the GF2 Ultra was the shiznit! I remember wanting one of those so badly - so I got a Kyro II.

I got one of them as well. And I wish they would make a star wars game like tie fighter again with up to date graphics - i have fond memories of that.

I still have my very first PCW magazine, from 1988 with an article about breaking the 640Kb barrier!

386DX-20 machines with 1Mb of RAM and 20MB HDD's only £3999+vat

Still got your old X-Wing Alliance gathering dust?

Try here - http://www.xwaupgrade.com/

High resolution model replacements for every object in the game - I love it! (There's also a patch out there to get it runing on Vista...)
