i had the same problem with my gtx285 i would be getting artifact then game would lock-up and would need to hard reboot. it generally cause by one of two thing or both. 1) graphic card is overheating the first sign is the green/purple boxes (artifact) if you don't exit the game when they first appear, then within few minute of them appearing the graphic card will shut down causing black/grey screen and system lockup. 2) the graphic cards has a high or incorrect overclock. solution i found was that both where causing my problem so install evga precision lower the pre-factory overclocker of 712 to 705. also when i tend to play any game then i use the fan control, take it off auto and set it on either 75% or 85% depending on what game im running and what setting i running the game at. since i've started doing this i had no artifact or systems lock-ups the only time that i've had them is when i've forgot to load evga precision up and set the setting before i load my game. now incase you wondering is it worth the hassle of doing this. to answer that yes as i generally play for 4-5 hours having no problems cause by the graphic card.

their are other programs that do the same thing as evga precision like msi afterburner.

ok thxs, i'll try that, my temps are fine dont go over 70, got lastest nvidea driver installed. I had it overclocked turn it off still same problem.

just ran 3dmark vantage went ok no problem there run again to be sure, seems abit off?

This semi literate man is at least semi correct: At first, check your overclock. The overclock usually causes this sort of problems, but if you're running at factory settings you should RMA (not your fault if the card doesn't run at factory settings). In any case, you have an RMA on your hands, sorry, Squares like that inidcate instability in the Vram of aid graphics card.

I had a 280 with similar issues. It would artifact, lose half the screen totally - generally the bottom half - and then randomly grey or black screen to nothing. It would also just black screen if i so much as nudged my case.

At first i thought maybe the pci-e slot had been damaged maybe when i was moving the pc around, but it did it in both pci-e lanes so it wasnt that. I replaced it with a gtx570 and have had no issues similar to these so it is definitely something on the card and not my mobo.

working fine at the moment i had to underclock the card, card out of warranty, not to worried got 8800gt as backup, plan to buy new card soon
