GTX280 Running way too hot

After upgrading to a HAF case, I have noticed that my GTX280 is running much hotter than it should be. It's about a year old and has gathered some dust over that time. It may have been running hot in my previous case (Antec 900), but im sure the fan wasn't as loud back then. It easily hits 80-90C when gaming, putting the fan on 100%, which is incredibly loud.

I just did a test using Furmark, at stock it reaches 97-98C after 15 mins, however with the side off it goes down to 93C. Is that right? If so i'm quite disappointed with the HAF airflow because it was meant to be really good. Is there anything I can do to reduce temps? I thought about taking off the heatsink and putting it back on with AS5 instead. How easy would this be?

Thanks for any help.

EDIT: Just FYI, it idles at 54C at 40% fan.

it does have High air flow(HAF), I got the problem one of the worst combos for heat, two HD4890 and they never get that hot, and they only run at 50-60%

I would say clean off the dirt using a air compresses or something, if you take the heatsink off it may void the warranty unless you put it on extremely well

I would move the HAF to the left it has a big side panal fan and all its sucking is wall :p, you should see were mine is and I have no problems

what company is the GTX280 ( I know Nvida but what brand is it? )

if its BFG assuming is registered than you got 10 years, EVGA I think is about 3-5 years XFX is not long :p asus is normally about 1-2years

I reseated the heatsink with AS5, and improved airflow by removing the side fan. But it has only decreased temperatures to about 90-92. Still hotter than it should be. I'm thinking of getting an aftermarket GPU cooler, does anyone have any preferences?

I m running on stock atm, zealmans i hear I qute good but for certin cards you needs heat sinks, and those ocuk don't sell, well not the one I wanted :(

I think your better off finding onces you like than finding reviews for them etc

Have you tried removing the shroud on the cooler and cleaning any dust out?
Yes I did that when I reseated the heatsink, there was a LOT in there. That's why im kind of surprised about the lack of temperature decrease. Maybe the AS5 needs more time to burn in.

AS5 does not have a run in time I believe well not so the temps will be that high at least should have dropped off quite a lot by now

could be a faulty card, but if its running hot but works fine than nothing to worry about imo

My GTX280 sits about 50c at idle with 40% fan so that pretty normal..furmark hit my card to 90c also these cards run very hot so temps seem preety normal if its, POV, Zotec etc ....
Do you have your HDD opposite the gfx card as most people do, if so try moving them to the top of the case as the card will be sucking warm air from your drives ;)

AS5 needs approx 200hrs cure time and advised to turn the pc off and let cool down 2-3 times during the cycle :)

Mine tops out at 86 deg C in my P182. I've never reseated the heatsink because I have the BFG and I want to keep the awesome warranty I paid extra for! It idles at 51 deg C with 40% fan and my case fans turned right down.

My card also runs hot, but as soon as the temp reaches 85C the fan goes to 100% and it stays at 85C or drops slightly lower, I have never seen >90C

AS% needs curing time but the difference is only a few degrees.

Maybe take the cooler off again and check the contact between GPU and heatsink?
