I'm upgrading my graphics card at the beginning of Feb to complete my new build and was wondering.. If the GTX295 is out for then, will I be able to run it on a Maximus II Formula as it is a P45 chipset.

I'm sure you can but I just wanted to make sure. ;)

Also, can you see it being a worthwhile investment over a 4870x2 as my monitor is only running at 1680x1050. I know it will be faster but enough to justify what ever price it may carry with it?

Thanks. :)

Do not buy a GTX 295 or 4870X2 for 1680x1050. The cards will be wasted at that resolution and you will end up spending £100-200 more than you need to.

A single 4870 or GTX260 would suit you down to the ground.

Thats what I thought. The only bit that made me unsure was because of it having two GPUs and SLi etcetcetc. Atleast I've cleared that up for future reference.

Edit:

I might go with a GTX260.. I've never actually owned an Nvidia card. Time for a change? There isn't much difference between that and the 4870.

Thanks :)

Is a 4870x2 enough for a 22" monitor? I'd rather not waste extra money on something just because it's new and more powerful, especially if I'm unlikely to see the benifits.

Thanks. :)

Yes, it's enough - the 4870X2 is designed for 1920x1200 or above, the resolutions of most 24'' screens. So I wouldn't waste the money on one for 1680x1050; you'll see very little, if no, improvement over a much cheaper HD4870 for example.

SLi or Crossfire would be almost totally wasted at 1680x1050. You don't really see decent scaling until you hit 1920x1200.

But if Billy213 has plans in the near future to upgrade his monitor display to a bigger size. Just keep in mind then it might be worth buying the better card now. If not then go with what the rest are thinking.

i had two 8800gt's in sli, but after 2 months i got rid of one because in many games it made no difference having the extra card.

i just bought a GTX 260 216 and it is brilliant.

Now though i have a 24" 1920 x 1200 monitor. Would that be worth buying another card for sli?
