i don't game enough to warrant a full system upgrade but am thinking a new card would give me a nice little boost. i'm assuming the rest of my specs are just about enough not to hold it back too much? :p

My 3.4Ghz q6600 is not really any faster for gaming than my 3.8ghz e5200 was.

A 460 should be just about spot on balance wise for a 3.3ghz core2. All e5200s will do 3.6ghz (every one of them, even the early ones) if your motherboard is up to it.

my e5200 is 2nd hand and the previous owner had it past 3.6ghz but the max i managed was 3.5ghz when i first got it. anything more than that started getting a bit toasty. a few months later i got the odd random crash in games and i was too lazy to troubleshoot it so i just dropped the overlock to 3.3 and it's been rock solid ever since. i think i'd need better cooling if i were to try pushing it again.

i must admit i'm tempted by a quad for other reasons. the hardware VT-x would come in handy. i just hate fitting cpus which is why didn't think of it immediately. after checking the MM they are pretty cheap these days and i might even be able to flog the e5200 for a few quid to help offset the cost.

i've just got to wait until tuesday before pulling the trigger on the 460 as i'm waiting for a cheque to clear.:p

The 460 (make sure it's a 1GB model!) is a pretty good card for the budget. In fact I'd probably go so far as to say it still gives the best performance per ££ of any card at the moment. I've had mine for 2 years now and I still play BF3 with everything on high (tried ultra, very little difference but a huge FPS hit) although only at 1680x1050 but still get 45-55FPS.
