GTX460 problems - change GPU?

I recently swapped out my old HD4850 for an Asus ENGTX 460 DirectCU 1GB which I bought from OC, which I haven't o/c'd. I'm running XP32 with 4 Gb ram but I know that XP can only access 3gb. My mobo is a Abit IP35 Pro with an Intel Quad core 2 64 -bit processor running at 3.02 ghz.

Right from the start using the 460 I was getting crashes and lock-ups on 3d games and applications. I tried different drivers and other fixes but to no avail. I only discovered on the web that some people were experiencing problems with the 460 after I bought it. The "final" advice was to reinstall the OS.

I re-installed XP and still got the problems. I then installed Windows 7 so that I could make use of the 64-bit processor and 4Gb of ram in the hope that this would work. However, I'm still getting BSOD and lock-ups so I have come to the conclusion that either there is incompatibility between the 460 and my mobo or that my 460 (or the Asus version at least) is just rubbish.

Can anyone shed any light on a possible problem using a IP35 mobo with the latest Nvidia cards?

As you can imagine I've wasted quite a bit of time installing OSs and drivers and messing around with this card.

I would like to try another card (not a 4 series one) so what would people recommend in the 5 series range within a sensible budget? I paid £109 for the 460. Will OC take back my 460 in exchange for a 5 series card plus the cash difference?

Any advice welcome - I'm at my wits end!
