Hi guy's, Trying to spec a decent upgrade for a friend.

His current rig is -

AMD 5600+ @ stock
3gb ddr2 800mhz
8800gt 512 (1680x1020)
coolermaster 460 psu
XP 32 bit

He can't afford much at all. He plays ARMA 2, and IL2 1946. And wants to play the forthcoming IL2 Cliffs of Dover upon its release in March.
Would it be wise to recommend a GTX 460 1GB, with that PSU and CPU?
His motherboard will allow cpus right up to hex core, but with the AM2+ socket.
I'm looking for the very best bang for buck here, £150 is absoloute limit.

Id be tempted to advise him to hold off upgrading and save up for a rebuild, could replace gfx, but ARMA2 is very CPU hungry so prob wouldnt help that game too much, and he's going to be running into memory limitations running 32 bit OS, save up til he can afford a whole new system incl 64bitOS (win7hp)

phenom quad has some l3 cache which the athlon doesn't have, however it does have higher clocks and is a bit more expensive. thought you said £150 was absolute highest and wanted to cram in a decent vga too

the 8800 is still a reasonable card, a 5770 is not a big enough step up to justify the outlay imo, youd be better just getting a cpu and leaving 8800 in there for now if you (he) must upgrade, but as I said Id be tempted to save up

i would go for the 460GTX it is very cheap and offers superior performance over the 8800 GTX plus it supports Directx 11.

To top it off, it is aaaaa lot smaller than the 8800 so fitting isnt a problem, just be sure to get the 1024 mb version. I picked up mynes for £150 OC's are selling them cheaper i think around £145.

Sorry got a bit carried away.

I would say as the other gentlemen have said, just save up for a better spec.

Though def do get windows 7 64- bit .
