Hi guys,
Bit of a lurker so this is my first post.

Theres lots of info on which 460 etc on here, which makes are better etc and I was considering getting a Gigabyte GTX460 1GB but now think I may stretch to a 470, any advise on which one for less noise good performance etc. Maybe its worth just getting a 460 and maybe another in the future?

Are there any imminent likely price drops coming for Nvidia stuff, or a new range on the horizon that I'm yet to hear about?

For some reason I'm a bit reluctant to go ATI, this isnt really justified but I think I'd be happier going the Nvidia route but what do people think?

Rig wise, currently:
i7 930
Asus P6X58D-E X58
Kingston 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz
8800GTX

Want to play Metro 2033, Final Fantasy 14 in the near future but I do tend to keep up with the latest and greatest and want things to look awesome. I switch between a couple of different monitors at home, one being a 32 inch samsung TV at 720p and another 40 inch samsug LED tv at 1080.

Many thanks people.

There is thought to be a GTX475 coming fairly soon based on the full GF104 chip, it will have 384 shaders and will likely be a bit faster than the GTX470. If the GTX460 is any indication then the GTX475 should run a fair bit cooler, use less power and overclock well.

The GTX470 is a very nice card though and will likely have a bit more compute power so it all depends on how quickly you want a card. I'm trying to hold out for the GTX475, but with Mafia 2 coming out in a weeks time i might end up going for a GTX460/470 instead.

lol seems every one hates fan noise theres a knob called volume control that i like to crank up got to like your games loud

the 470 @ 65% fan speed is ok but once it hits 70 u will notice it

a 470 clocked @ say 850 will out preform a 460 @ the same clock speed but saying that some people have been clocking the 460 to 900+

temp wise when i had my 470's on air was seeing 52c idle and load temps of 70-85c whilst gaming as i never used the cards @ stock

as to the 475 i think it will be released with a really high price tag thats not worth the gains over the 470

Hey Skeksis, I'm in the same boat here :) I was tempted to go with the same 460 model, I'm upgrading from a 8800GTX too....mine will be mainly for FF14...so...i'm going to wait closer to its release, and see what cards are out mid September...then make your mind up then.

I know, I know, I should really wait and see what happens, just saw the MSI 470 is now in stock though and I'm far too tempted.

How is the GTX 475 going to be more powerful with 384 shaders?

Faster clocks. I'm already running my 460 at faster levels than a stock 470, so a 475 will clock and run as fast as a hen on crack.

Hi,

I'm more than pleased with my GTX 470. I paid over £300 for mine when they first came out so you are getting a steal with today's prices.

I had a 5870 which I had issues with, swapping to the 470 and I have none. Very pleased with it and I'd recommend it. Sure they can run quite hot so make sure you have some extra case fans but the reports you read on the net are far worse than the reality of the situation.

interesting, I wanted to pick up a £225 470 this month, now do I wait only to pay more for a more expensive card or get me a bargain like I did with my GTX 280 when ocuk did random ones for £230:)

Go for it :D mine clocks like a champ and runs everything really well. Only slight niggle is the fan noise in certain scenarios - but it rarely happens in normal gaming just stress tests.

How does the 470 stack up against the 260 sli setup Rroff? I was considering purchasing a 470 in the next few weeks, then maybe add another at some time for sli.

Out the box it was a bit slower than my heavily OC'd GTX260 SLI setup, but once I clocked it from 607MHz to 800+MHz it pulls a bit ahead - in some stuff its quite a bit faster in others about the same. The thing I notice most is framerates seem far more consistant and minimums are often a good bit higher even when averages/max aren't.

Knowing what I do now I probably wouldn't be in a hurry to upgrade from 200 series SLI to the 470 but neither do I have any regrets.

Im currently running the 275's at stock, may try clocking them a bit to see what theyre capable off. But even at stock they cope pretty well with anything im playing at 1920x1200. Maybe hold on to them and wait for the next round of DX11 cards.
