Should it not be a flat surface?

Temps were not bad but my previous 480 was way cooler, the fact the heat pipes are not making any contact with the core is bound to have a negative impact on temps. I'm not looking for a mirror finish, just a completely flat surface.

In that case I would do it for sure.

Lapped plus new TIM should make all the difference

Yeah Just looks like the heatpipes are a little recessed, so perhaps you might gain a little by lapping. Its a nice finish on the heapipes though :)

Why not, one done here.

There was a thread about it a while back. What you are effectively doing is reducing the thickness of the heatpipes walls. If you weaken it too much or rub away too much of the surface then the pipes can rupture and release the contents.

Doesnt matter to a normal heatsink its just a lump of copper reducing its thickness wont matter.

In this case you are reducing the walls of a pipe.

By all means you can risk and be very careful not to touch the pipes. Safer to get a third party cooler.

Have a look at this picture http://www.madshrimps.be/vbulletin/f22/don-t-lap-direct-heatpipe-touch-heatsink-57924/

Varnish? I feel I have missed something epic :(

He might be a bit of a chump when it comes to computers as he's demonstrated a few times, but in this instance he isn't wrong, so you're all laughing at him over something he's actually correct about.

A lot of people will use something like nail varnish or hot glue to stop capacitor/coil squeal/whine.

All you need to do is google search "capacitor squeal hot glue".

I'd sooner use hot glue with it being easy to remove.

But you did all laugh at him for talking rubbish when he was in fact correct.

Pouring varnish over the whole card is quite chump-like, I don't dispute that part though.

Get off your high horse and lighten up. It was the "pouring of varnish in the back of the GPU" which was the reason for ridicule.
