GTX480 temp with MSI afterburner

Hi All, I took the side off my corsair obsidian 800d today as one of my cathode tubes fell off. and i noticed the gtx480 was really hot. I know these typically do run hot.

I opened up MSI afterburner and the fan speed % was set to 'auto' and was at '44' and the temp was running at about 70

this isnt under any load just running windows and a few programmes. eg explorer and word.

my question is what temp should these run at idel? and whats the danger level? i cranked the fan speed% upto 100 and after a min or two temp dropped to about 50

another quick q is what does the core voltage (mV) do ? ive not touched it but its set quite low.

thanks all

core voltage you can up it to stabilise overclock but increases heat.

"normal idle" doesnt apply to a 480 IMHO and 70c may be about right. With a 480 you need as much cool air hitting it as possible, noisy noise willing.

i think i may see the issue i have as i have a asus sound card in the next pci-e slot which sits directly under the gtx480. if i remember right the fans are on the underside so i maybe restricting airflow/cooling into the card.. ? maybe i should think about watercooling the card ???

Indeed this.

My 480 idles at 63-65 with pretty good air cooling in the case..

The lowest I've ever got as a recording was 43 when I left my window wide open and put the pc to sleep with hwmonitor running.

It peaks at 93.

2 monitors

Fermi runs hot. Don't worry too much.

Aftermarket cooler

36c idle 75c load!! Best £40 ever spent and very quiet !

Just for the record I only just got my 480 and even with stock cooler
it was
45c idle 90c load. Not sure if the updated them but you should not really be hitting temps that high idle, unless you got really bad airflow or you dusted up to death!!!
