So after much effort of searching the internet using this on screen keyboard I figured it would be good to confirm what I think I know.

The GTX480 appears to be close to, if not the best value for money in higher performance cards according to...

So it seems to be fairly good for its age. Is there any real disadvantage if I bought this card? It seems to be the best for under 200.

Is it compatible with ivy bridge boards?

Sorry this has probably been asked before and I have looked about for info on this card but every seems to be that everyone is talking about newer cards, especially the 6970. I presume it's the next best value card beyond 200.

Cheers in advance.

it is still a good card for the money tbh
it will work fine with Ivybridge motherboards

Only downside with pretty much any 480, heat and noise. unless your watercooling the card, expect loads of both. :)

if that is the price range you are looking, also consider a GTX570, now under £200 (£170ish), there are some real bargains at the moment as Nvidia are dumping stock to prepare the way for GTX660

or for £180 the AMD 7850 is apparently a very good overclocker as well

I'd have thought you could pick up a decent 2nd hand 580 for around the £200 mark (should you wish to consider 2nd hand of course). Stil a decent performer, running a single monitor at 1080 I certainly have no intention of upgrading mine for a while yet.

bizarely, 580's are still holding their price quite well, they still seem to be hitting mid 250's in a lot of cases for, as you put it, decent ones

I'd say the 570 or the 7850 are your best bet for around the £180 mark.

Have a look at the Bench on Anandtech for these two - http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/549?vs=518

Similar in a lot of games although the 570 is a better performer in DiRT and BF3 in particular but the 7850 is generally quieter and draws a fair bit less power.

Think about the games you play and at what resolutions and see if one looks to be the best for your needs.

I've seen second hand GTX 480's go for £105! But I suspect the people were after a quick sale a more realistic price is £120-£130. It is the best value card bar none just the heat and power draw puts a lot of people off.
