Been browsing round the gfx cards I can't afford - let along justify the cost of - again and started thinking about just overclocking my existing GTX 580 Hydrogen instead. Stuck Afterburner on to see the stock clocks of 800/1024/1600 GPU/Mem/Shader. Had a quick read of some OC guides and found that by burning another 100 Watts of power, I could get a whole 3 FPS!

Am I just not looking at extreme enough guides or is it pretty much pointless to overclock this GPU?

Many thanks for the input.

I wouldn't bother to over clock it as 3fps improvement even in game like crysis 3 isn't justifying 100w more. But this is completely up to you what you do. I would save some money and sell your current gpu and get 290x or 780/ti as they are on sale right now.

I could get 930mhz on mine on stock volts. Not sure where you get another 100w from.
Why dont you just try and see what it does just stick it on 900mhz and run some tests then up it a bit more if stable.

If you cant afford a new card then you have nothing to lose.

100watts of leccy is roughly 1 pence per hour.
My 580 does 966 @ 1187 mv which made crysis 3 allot smoother IMO

Cant remember exactly but I probably got 8-10 hours of game play out of crysis 3.
I reckon the extra 10 pence over stock was well worth it
