GTX670 keeps freezing

Hi

I have had delivered from here a B-Grade Gigabyte GTX670 (GV-N670OC-2GD)

to install I uninstalled ccc (from old GPU's) removed cards and then installed this one. I checked the Bios using Gigabyte VGA @BIOS and all correct.
I installed the Nvidia control panel from the Gigabyte website rebooted. Froze one so I then downloaded the update from the Nvidia site.

Since then I have had a couple of freezes. The first whilst playing a game and watching a film on the 2nd monitor. The other just browsing and watching the film.

This is annoying. The only thing that has changed is removing the CF 4870's and replacing with 1 GTX670 and swapping the software.

Any ideas what is causing this? could it be a faulty card hence B-Grade? The box was pretty battered and screwed up antistatic bag, but all the coverings for the contacts where present & correct.

System has just froze again whilst only browsing.

Then gave me this pop-up -

This came up a few times after I had installed the driver from the Gigabyte site.

I guess the only thing you can do is make sure your end is not the problem.

Bios: What bios version is the card running? Recently there was a new bios released.

Windows: Shouldn’t be necessary, but you could take the drastic step of reformatting your pc and installing windows clean.

Also how long have you had the card for?

Its using the bios version F13.

The other bios versions on the gigabyte website don't work. However I will try and flash all the versions they have available including this one again.

It is running windows 8 and is a fairly clean install that was running faultlessly until putting in this graphics card so I really don't want to re-install again. (installed 27th April)

ETA: there are 4 bios versions on the website, F4, F13, F5, F21. F21 states a different BIOS version and fails flash, same with F4 & F5. It won't re-flash F13 as bios version is the same.

Hi mate, F13 will not flash F4, F5, or F20, F21. It will only flash F10, 11, 12.

Check this page to flash with a modified bios and then back to F13 to ensure nothing has corrupted with your current bios:

If you find the modded bios good you may even want to keep it as it allows higher voltage and power targets.

I would reinstall the Nvidia drivers too afterwards and make sure you use drivesweeper to remove all traces.

It appears that there is a problem with the GTX670 from Gigabyte and the Z77 chipset.

Two solutions I have seen are 1, not enough power, seeing as I was running 2x HD4870 and gone to one card, I doubt that is the problem.
2, it is incompatable with PCI 3 on the Z77 boards. I have dropped the bios down to Gen2 and no improvement.

what motherboard bios are you using? you might need to test with latest beta bios

which is f19h,you can always flash back if it doesn't improve things

http://www.mediafire.com/?wp1pb7a7q3k413m GA-Z77-D3H - F19h

setting vcore voltage response to fast and pwm phase control to extreme in the bios might help things too

What was the update from the Nvidia site?

Do you mean the latest driver?

I cannot use the 314.22 driver either as I was getting that very same crash as well. The latest driver is fine though and driver 314.07 was the best for me.

The update was 314.22, I did a clean install ontop of the previous, and then did a system restore and installed 314.22 fresh That appears to be the latest. I will try and find 314.07

Thanks

OK. I have installed 320.00 beta driver from NVidia. Still froze.

I have then tried the f19h motherboard driver. Since then had freezes and random reboots.

I think I need to get hold of the superior HD4870 cards and go back to those :(

are you using x.m.p to setup your pc memory?

enabled vcore voltage response to fast and phase control to extreme performance?

if it still does it idk what it is

One thing I forgot is games tend to crash to desktop and display error msg pops up if the CPU voltage is too low on z77

Look in event viewer for whea parity 19 processor warnings,if there's a lot try one level higher CPU llc

I think it's always risky buying a B grade graphics card, a lot of people seem to have issues.

Yup, I will now avoid.

Hopefully i can get a refund from OCuk.

Now the question is what to replace it with. I cannot afford a new 670 so GTX660Ti, GTX660 or 7870 XE or 7950?
