Right im stilling having issues with my sli 670 cards doing odd things

When gaming and i admit mostly in diablo 3 which might be the issues sometimes the cards appear to lock up, by that i mean the usage drops all the way down to 0% then after about 20ish seconds both fans on the cards spin all the way up to maximum, sometimes the system recovers other times it requires me to reset the box. This tends to happen only once or twice into a gaming evening generally within the first hour then seems to stop and is fine for the rest of then night.

One of my memory sticks was failing memtest but tat was swapped out and all is now ok. MSI afterburner is set to ramp the fans up 1% per degree and at most the top card gets to about 65ish, using core temp to monitor the hottest core shows at most 55-60 c but generally float around the mid 40s when in game. Ive reinstalled the graphics drivers setup sli profiles as per suggestions on the d3 website. Im running out of ideas, neither cards are overclocked power usage is set to 100% as per default in afterburner and they have both got dedicated power cables from my ocz 1250 zt unit, logic isnt installed and the igpu is disabled in the bios. Both cards bench ok using the heaven bench and ive also ran them under furmark for about 20min without any crashing, ive tried ati tool artifact testing but im running a 64bit os and the entire tester shows full artifacts, im guessing thats driver related though as im sure id see major issues if it was failing that much.

Im running out of ideas and sort of it being a graphics card or just succy diablo 3 issues but ive never had these problems on my old non sli 8800gtx setup

What is happening in the background that you don't see is "The display driver has stopped responding and has recovered". This generally means your overclock isn't stable. The trouble with Nvidia newer cards is you can't adjust the volts, which is normally the easy way to fix this problem.

You can try adding the +100MV on both cards to see if this helps or you will have to find out which card is doing this and return it.

wouldnt furmark cause them to fail though if it was the cards? its way more intensive the diablo3 or could it be my cpu thats causing the issue. my sabertooth board auto clocks up to 4.0 on the cpu could that be the issue? could a cpu cause the cards to mis-behave?

It is not your CPU because it would hard lock or BSOD. I am not a fan of furmark, as this is a GPU killer but I hear what you are saying. There have been a number of reports about the 670 having these issues and generally they need to be returned. I just wanted to see if the +100MV would solve the issue and save you having to RMA.

No known fault, just in my perusal of forums, I read every now and then this same problem. It is a problem for both makes of cards and 99.99% of the time, a small increase in volts sorts the problem out. I had it on a 560TI and increased voltage a fraction and never had a problem again.

The biggest problem I see with Nvidia's 6XX series cards is the lack of voltage adjustment and I hoped the +100MV would cure that.

Question... is he running version 2.2.3 of Afterburner? and an MSI 670 PE? if not, then surely trying to add voltage via AB will do nothing :confused::confused:

yes and no does that mean its not gonna work?

As far as I'm aware, the majority of 670's use voltage controllers that do not support any form of control/monitoring features. And yes I do appreciate that tools like GPU-z purport to show the core voltage. What they are actually doing, is just displaying what the voltage is expected to be and not actually reading the voltage.

There are a few exceptions... EG. the MSI 670 PE (use version 2.2.3, as the later versions now even have the facility to change the voltage removed! blame Nvidia for this). There are a number of threads floating around on this forum (and just about every other PC techie forum come to that) discussing Nvidia's actions in twisting the arm of the card manufacturers to prevent "voltage adjustment" on the Kepler cards.

Well I had a bit of a run on d3 and again it did the same again although recovered this time, so I rebooted and let the machine sit for a bit while I had dinner fired up a different game, endless space, and it played fine until around 11ish without any problems im starting to think this is a diablo3 issue rather than a card issue

Good points Mikeo. I forgot that the 2.2.4 AB removes voltage control. I hope it is just the game Stuie but if not, find out what card it is and return it is the best advice. It is not performing like it should and this isn't good/fair.

Totally agree with gregster. Try and find (if possible) which card is causing the problem (IE. by trying each card on it's own). Then again if possible, try it in another machine for final confirmation. A pain I know... But obviously a large investment in money to not be totally happy with what you've bought.

Good luck.

PS. A slight side issue but still pertaining to this thread... As to Furmark and similar artificial stress test type applications.... I've seen numerous situations where cards will run fine in these, but then throw a decent stressful game at them and an OC will still fail! While I think these sorts of apps have a place in sorting out a card OC / stability (like many ... I use them myself) the only real test... is playing games.

Did you run one card at a time?
