GTX680 HDMI sound

I've built up a new system, what was originally to be a simple htpc rig ended up featuring a nice gtx680. But I am left feeling a little annoyed. The computer is connected to my Sony SDRHD820 av receiver via HDMI which in turn is connected to the TV via HDMI. Video work well and looks great but sound is only stereo. Windows 7 64bit reports only 2 channel available on the Sony AV (which btw is a 7.2 channel receiver).

Does anyone have any experiance with this? Is the problem the receiver (which i doubt), does the nvidia only support stereo over hdmi (which would be really crap for £350) or am I doing something silly here.

Have you tested it with confirmed 5.1 or higher sources lime games and movies?

I've test it with several multi channel sources and get nothing but stereo. All I can do in the mean time is to run an optical cable from the onboard sound card. Done some searching and it seems NVIDIA in there wisdom removed driver support for multi channel over hdmi. Hopefully they get it sorted cause for the money its a big let down.

It doesn't sound right that they removed it, that'd be an incredibly stupid move, multi channel sound over HDMI should be a checkbox feature.

I've got virtually the same set up as you.

Have you tried going in to:
Change system sounds
Playback tab
Click on Sony amp
Click configure
Choose audio channels (on mine it shows options from stereo to 7.1surround

Tried as you suggest but the under sony av and configure the only option is stereo

Fixed it and worth noting for future reference. The sony amp has an option under hdmi settings amp or amp and tv. The default setting is amp and tv but from looking over the manual it states if problems arise with surround inputs change this to amp only. Changed it and the full range of speaker options appeared in windows.
