Does anybody know the performance difference between running the new 680 on a PCI-E 2.0 slot than a 3.0 slot?

I'm planinng on getting one when I get my Crosshair V but if it won't run at full performance on 2.0 as 3.0 then I'm not sure.

(I'm noob at GPU's)

I'm just gonna jump in here and make a wild guess that the card won't fully saturate a pci-e 2.0 16x slot

not sure what to guess about pci-e 2.0 8x slots, although probably enough bandwidth on one of them aswell.

But since I dunno what I'm talking about you should ignore what I've written.

..+1

I just want to know if there will be a performance loss if running on PCI-E 2.0, and if so, how much.. If it's going to be huge then I'll just get a 580.. or two.

I'm not sure about the 680, but other comparisons I have seen so far widely suggested very little, if any difference. I can't see this being much different.

Okay, thanks for the heads up. I'll keep my eye on some reviews and see if they release any info but who knows :\

well, I've been looking into sli 580s on a maximus iv ex-z which has pci-e .0 8x/8x for sli, I've read that 2.0 8x is plenty for moden graphics cards, but I didn't do much research yet.

But the crosshair v formula support 2.0 16x/16x sli so you'd have even moooar bandwidth.

I dont think they will use full potential of the PCIe 2.0 x16 slots like the dude in the first reply said(OptimaLnrg)

It would be foolish to release a card this early on in the game that people with PCIe 2.0 x16 slots cant get the full potential from. I do wonder if it would have any effects on stuff like folding though? Doesnt folding use the GPU in a different way and use more bandwidth? Im sure i read something along those lines but i might be mistaken and just dreamed that up. Even if it does use more bandwidth for stuff like that i dont think there will be an advantage to PCIe 3.0 with the current top end cards, its all speculation of course untill ivybridge is released but i just cant see them punishing all the PCIe 2.0 motherboard owners untill its really neccessary to use that amount of bandwidth wich i reckon would be a couple of years away at least.

The main advantage of PCIe-3 at this point, is probably for motherboards that come out with x4 second slots. Running crossfire or SLI on those boards will be better, with mid range cards at least.

4x slots on PCI-E 3.0 have the same bandwidth as 8x on 2.0 right? There's going to be no noticable difference going above 8x PCI-E 2.0 in anything.
