hey all,

will a 2gb gtx770 run 3x 24" screens at decent framerate?

Looking to upgrade to tripple monitor for driving games but not sure if a single card can cope with the load.

I play a lot of different games but only really the driving games (grid 2, asseta corsa, gtr evo/race 07 etc) will be using the extra 2 screens. normally all games are run at max graphics but currently only running 1x 1920x1080 lcd.

the card is watercooled and lightly overclocked to 1280mhz, rest of system is in my sig.

thanks for reading

For a rough estimate divide your current fps by 3 to know what to expect.

The 770 will cope as long as you're not expecting lots of eye candy and are willing to drop quite a few settings down to at least medium & also use fxaa in more recent titles like AC & rF2.

For a comparison my 290 Tri-X at a res of 5760x1080 can't quite manage a constant 60fps in AC with fairly high settings / 2xmsaa & a grid of 18 cars at Nurburg GP.

Sits at around 50-55fps & uses 2.8gb of vram.

thanks for that, good info.

would a pair of these cards in sli make much of a difference to the multi monitor setup performance? they are quite cheap these days.

770 sli would give higher fps, but that isn't the problem.

Only having 2gb vram is.

Each card in sli, or Crossfire, needs the game scene info loaded onto them so they can draw the frame for the monitor to display.
That's why 2x2gb cards is still only a maximum of 2gb vram for the game engine to work with.

2gb isn't enough in AC for high gfx settings, large field of ai cars & triple screens.

In older titles like GTR2 & Race 07, which are based on the ISI GMotor engine, you shouldn't hit the 2gb vram limit I expect, even at max settings.
You'd just need to watch the aa levels.

Again for another comparison I tried GameStockCar 2013, which is based on the ISI GMotor engine, at 4468x1080, max settings, level 4 aa + an 18 car field.

It used 1.2gb vram and stayed at around 90fps. Cpu is a 4770k @ 4.4ghz.

Personally I'd sell your current 770 & grab a 4gb 970.

You wouldn't get the same fps as a 770 sli setup, but you wouldn't have to worry about the vram problem anymore. For most games anyway.

A 970 is a bit quicker than a 290, so my AC figures above should give you an idea what to expect performance wise.

I have 2XGTX680s (2GB) and was running 5760x1080 beforing upgrading to SLI GTX970s and 4K.

The performance is very similar to the 770s +-10%

You are going to have multiple problems, raw power (if you want AA) but mostly with VRAM as newer games seem to be needing more especially due to consoles having 8GB shared VRAM

I would do the same as what MoodyB mentioned

ok thanks guys. well that puts the monitor upgrade back a month or so then. can't afford a pair of monitors and a new gpu (or 2) this side of christmas.

thank you for the info, it's very helpful.

Just make sure & stick with NVidia if you're going to be mainly playing racing sims.

In the ones I've tried ( AC, PCars, rF1 & rF2, GSC2013 ) NV cards are at least 25-30% quicker than ATI cards for now.

i'd rather an nvidia card anyway, less heat if nothing else.

my mate has an amd 270(something) with a look-a-like twin frozr cooler. it seems to run the racing games quite well but not done a side by side test and his rig is much older and lower spec so hard to compare really.

love your side Moody, bang on the money!
wasn't it around Quake online that it all started back in the 90's? spose it became more of a problem with CoD

ATI cards do run them well, its just that comparable NV cards run them a bit better for now :)

I had a 780 before switching to a 290 for mismatched resolution triple screen & noticed a drop in performance with the same in-game settings in the racing titles I play.

Still worth it for me though as I don't have the space for 3x24" screens.

I don't see the point in joining a multiplayer game & sitting 300 miles away inside a bush clicking the mouse button, but each to their own.

I think Quake was the first online multiplayer with a 'sniper rifle', but i'm not sure. At least I think you could class the rail gun as one I guess, in a way.

I think the real problem is as you get older its harder to keep up with the pace in some games, so when you get 1-hit-killed it's frustrating because it has taken you twice as long as other people to get where you were :)

That's why I refuse to play anything will 1-click melee kills. My blood pressure couldn't cope :D
