Given we know the technical specs for the 960, what would be the better performer the 280x or the 960?

I've got a 280x but fancy the 960 if the price is right. I don't game as much as I used to but still like to dabble with BF4 and the COD series games along with Skyrim. I know it might be a side step...perhaps the 960 a touch faster when overclocked but what's the thinking with you guys? Keep the 280x or go for the 960? I don't mind a side step if the 960 is just that..a side step

I wouldn't be surprised it performed slightly better than a 280X but not enough to warrant an upgrade, especially as the first 960s have 2GB vram available which is a 1GB downgrade. I do expect MSI to release 4GB versions though as they have done with all of the recent mid range Kepler cards.

I would wait and see what happens with the 960Ti as that'll likely have a 192bit bus and 3GB vram which is more of a contender. I don't have access to the MM but that could be worth keeping an eye on as used 970s would offer a real upgrade that would be worth it.

Honestly it looks to be about as fast or maybe just over the 760....which would be a downgrade or at best a sidegrade for you.

I'd keep what you have for now - see what's next also from AMD and if you find you don't run things as fast as you want then upgrade.

But spending money on at best a sidegrade.....not something I'd recommend

Going on leaked Firestrike scores it's around GTX680/770 level.

Those 2 cards are the same as a 280x so your gains would depend on overclocking head room.

I think it is totally pointless guessing, just wait for the proper reviews.

I can see this thread going to about 10 pages of totally pointless speculation and not much else.:)

Can't use paypal credit on the MM though lol...hence me looking to buy a new card and selling my 280x to raise some cash

would be waste of time tbh. a 280x is still a very decent card.

only cards you should go minimum is a 970 or 290.

This, with a side order of this. Once it's out see how it does and decide. Before then it's pointless. (The 390X vs 980Ti thread cracks me up!)

If you can afford to take what's likely to be an 100 quid hit for what's likely to be zero perceptible gain, why don't you put off till you can afford a 290 or a 970? Or pick up a second hand 280x and crossfire if your psu has the grunt and give yourself more power than any single card?

Or even just upgrade to a bigger SSD. Anything other than waste money on a sidegrade :p

I an understand the desire to tinker with something new, and I can appreciate that even more when considering changing to a different brand. That quite often appeals to me. Despite all that, I think you'd be better off with either going for a faster radeon or a 970 (or above).

Although it'll probably be a fair bit quieter/ smaller, if such things are important.

I've got a 280X, and the cards I'm interested in are the 380X, the 960Ti and the 965Ti if it exists. The 960 isn't going to be cheap, and in all likelihood will trade blows with the 280X rather than beating it.

Then again, it could actually perform worse. We just don't know. The (few) leaked benchmarks could be fake/ meaningless.

Nonsense, I'm sure we can work this out.

GTX-960

960

The ninth letter of the alphabet is I
The sixth letter of the alphabet is F
The zero-th letter of the alphabet does not exist

I-F

I = Iodine
F = Fluorine

Mix the two and you get Iodine monofluoride.

Iodine monofluoride is used to produce pure nitrogen triiodide.

Nitrogen triiodide is a highly volatile contact explosive.

The GTX960 will have explosive performance!
