Hi all,

I've been waiting for years to upgrade and don't think I can wait for BattleMage to see how that goes.

Even though I could afford a 4080 I just can't justify it - prices are insane and it's also a matter of principle. I also don't want to upgrade CPU/mobo just yet.

I want to go from 1080p to 1440p, possibly ultra-wide. I think my options are either RX 7800XT or a used 3080 from MM.

Just wanted to get some other opinions so I can mull it over and either do something about it, or just continue to grumble and play older stuff while I wait for reasonable prices. :(

A used 3080 is a great buy at the moment. I use one with my 3440x1440p UW and still get great performance, even in games like CP2077. Sure you're a little bit limited by the 10GB of VRAM but at that res you'll be OK in 95% of games. If that is an issue a 3090 would be a great option too.

You've waited this long, so I'd suggest give it a few weeks to see what the new Nvidia cards bring and maybe some price drops for existing cards.

Ps. Still have my MSI Twin Froza GTX970 in rig #2. Great for emulation. ;)

I'd be surprised if the super cards are much better value, but you might as well wait and see if they are competitive. 7800 XT is a great upgrade if you can't/don't want to wait.

Used 380 for about £300, job done and you won't feel ***-raped.
That's what I'm leaning towards to be honest. Annoyingly, CUDA is quite useful to me on the odd occasion.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'll hang tight for a bit and see what crops up. Now to figure out which monitor I want and whether I can tolerate losing dual screen setup in favour of UW (or maybe I can just mount one above an UW) :)

You have to take it into perspective. The guy is coming from a gtx 970. He is definitly going to he running into the 10gb problems.

I would advise you go for the 7800xt. Less likely to run into that vram problem. Even if you use the card aslong as you did the gtx 970.

I see 3080 has a 12GB variant option but I'm guessing at the prices those go for I may as well get the 7800XT with a warranty.

I'll hang it out for a few more weeks anyway but maybe there will be some reductions in January sales :)

I'm in a similar situation, I have a similar performance RX 570 and am looking for an upgrade. I think I'm going to wait to see what Nvidia brings, hopefully it will reduce the price of the old stuff or have more performance for the same money.

I am expecting to be massively disappointed. It's a pretty depressing situation to be in, even if you do have the funds for it. I wonder how many people have just given up and got a PS5, Steam Deck or something else. :)

Anyways, at least there are some options it seems!

I went from 970 to 3070. It runs my 1440p monitor at high frame rates (i.e. >60Hz, often well over 100Hz) in all the games I play at max settings. Ultra-wide would push it a bit harder, obvs.

Still running my 970, downgraded from 980ti that was acting up a few years back. And I barely play games these days.
I have no plans of upgrading with these GPU prices, not even for the new build that I'm still waiting on a few parts for.
Until I see 6950xt/3090ti/7900xt performance below £500, the poor generational price/performance gains put me off supporting such hardware with my hard earned £££.

3080 is a fantastic card if you can get one used for £300, going new you’d need to spend at least £750 to get something that’s faster and even then it’s not by much.

Rumour is the 4070 Super is 10% faster and 10% more expensive, well, $650. So it will be 5% faster than the 7800XT and $150 (30%) more expensive.

IMO Nvidia's cards are too expensive to even consider.

3080, amazing card 12 GB version if possible.

If the price starts to get near used RTX 4070 then go for that. DLSS Frame generation makes a big difference in single player games,
