Right i have narrowed it down to either
2 x Gigabyte G1 or 2x Asus Strix

Would these be your weapons of choice or should i wait for the 970 ref with titan cooler?????
 
Reference titan style coolers would be better for temps. The 900 series are cooler running than previous cards, but even still you could see quite high temps on the top card. Your mobo has similair spacing to mine and my top card does get pretty hot.
 
I no longer have any side fans in the 600T as I have an all acrylic side panel so the 290 does dump a lot of heat into the case that's why I would prefer the cooler to dump the heat out the back.
