When the next next of consoles roles round, what audio formats do you think they might support? Will they be using dolby digital and the like still, or would they have moved on to Dolby True HD?

Also, how long do you think they will continue to support optical and rca outputs?

Seems to me the logical step would be HD audio to follow the HD video. :) Uncompressed most likely due to no doubt bluray support across the board now.

I pray i dont see more posts from you if that's how you reply to perfectly fine questions

In fairness, it's a seriously sad and geeky question ;)

For me, sound was mastered on games consoles years ago and it's not something I ever think about now. The PS1 could play CD quality sound. Even the Amiga could play very impressive sound that was only restricted to storage.

How many people use the 5.1 formats currently? Not a lot I'd reckon. I'd estimate that 95%+ of 360/PS3 are used via the TV speakers.

Too much of a drain on resources to produce dynamic HD sound imo. Look at Forza 3 the sound DSP falls over because of the CPU load goes over 100% at times.

It will probably be the same or similar to what it is now, it's not like there's a lot of room for expansion unless you're an audiophile and most gamers are not.

Indeed, the poor sound quality of gaming headsets and computer speakers proves this...

In my opinion, sound is overlooked a little in games, people seem to spend hundreds on high end GFX cards, and huge screens, then buy some cheap and nasty speakers for £50 or so... such a shame.

Once you try some decent headphones (2.0) or a nice 5.1 speaker system with loud and clean output, there's no going back.
