I’m looking for a free, fairly basic guestbook app preferably written in asp.net.

I know it’s a bit 1990’s, but it’s for my father in law who runs his local rugby club site and he wants a simple way for people to leave comments.

A way to set up multiple guest books would be nice, as would bot protection and possibly log in capabilities.

We have asp.net 3.0 and sql server 2005 with our hosting package so it should be able to handle most stuff.

I’ve googled but most of the solutions available look rubbish.

You answered your own question really mate. Nobody uses them anymore.
There are lots of older tutorials on how to make one though. Might be worth a shot?

At worst, surely you could take a bad one and just make it better?

I'd have no problems making one from scratch, it's just new house + work commitments leaves me with very little time for projects like this.

Similar things are still widely used, but normally in a different context to a traditional "guestbook" e.g. the customer reviews on ocuk, or reader comments on most news sites. I just can’t find anything.

How about letting a third-party service like Google deal with this? You could try using Google Docs/Sites as in this tutorial.
That looks quite interesting, I'll take a look. Do you know if it's possible to reformat the layout of the spreadsheet when you publish it as a web page? I don't really want the data presented in a flat table format.
