Hi Peeps,

We have an consultant who visits our site every so often, and he needs access to some files on our file server, we cant enrol his PC onto our domain. So we have created a user with the correct access privileges, and put a shortcut to the DFS path to the directory. When he clicks it, he is prompted for credentials ie username: “domainname/jbloggs” and password obviously. But he cant access the file and i cant for the life of me think what it is! I thought that as long as thier credentials where ok they could access stuff?

Does anybody out there know how this can be done?

Thanks!!!

if you map the drives with net use i find it normally works if the gui fails. Also i find DFS can be a pain in these situations try mapping to the share path on the server not the DFS path.

Have you set the correct permissions on this drive/file... IE. Right click file/drive --->Properties--->Security--->Add--->username

Do you have some sort of user manager? Can you add him to one of the distribution groups which has permissions on DFS?

Lol the user has correct permissions and I have used both varieties of slashes! :P

Looks like Sone has some good ideas, I'll try them!

Your letting him plug his laptop into your network? Everywhere I've worked that's been a no no as you can't guarentee his AV protection and Patching etc etc. Personally I'd give him the files on a thumb drive when he arrived and copy them back when he left I wouldn't let him anywher near my LAN.

I checked his AV and it was ok. He's a consultant that will be working with us for at least 2 days a week for the next 3 or so months and really needs access to the shared files, its all good and working now however. In the end i didnt do anything he said it just started working ?
