I am new to all this and I have the following system;

Asus P5E64WS
Intel Q6850 3Ghz (currently running at 3.3Mhz by increasing clock from 9 to 10)
Asus Triton Fan
4Gb Ram
Radeon HD4870
1000w PSU

Not sure what other info you may need, but getting back to my problem. I find this very hard to overclock. If we peek within any motherboard BIOS setting there are so many things which can be tweaked and I am worried that I may permanently damage the CPU.

I have heard that the Intel quad cannot be overclocked very well; is this true?

Can someone help?

p.s. I did post this in general and was advised to ask here

They can overclock good if your on water ect ect but not that great on air.
also depends on your chip, most can get to 3.6 though so aim for that.

and try to keep to a boundry, when the cpu is at full load dont let it go past 70c, 75c is the maximum limit that people dont want to go over with quads even though they have a TDP of 100, also quad cores dont like heat so if its high that will hamper your clocks.

hope this helps.

Hello ViRuS2k

I can get 3.66Mhx without any problems, but if I try anything above that, it goes **** up. So you have confirmed my thoughts

Thanks

Np ;) there is always more volts but if its still unstable with 2 vcore bumps, then you have hit the limit of that chip..
