Hello,
I need some help and guidance please, I'm looking to upgrade my existing computer and replace many of the parts, what I need is some advice and also how to go about doing this.
Firstly this is the computer I have now, which is a bit ancient and could do with a bit of a revamp:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @ 1.86Ghz
1GB Ram
AS Rock P45 Mobo
1x 250GB Main HDD with Windows XP installed on it
1x 500GB HDD with extra videos and data etc..
Gainward ATi Radeon HD4850 512mb
OCZ Stealthstream 600W PSU
19 Samsung 940BW
And this is what I was thinking about purchasing in terms of an upgrade (Budget around £380 Max) :
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
An AM3 Mobo of some sort
4GB of DDR3 Ram
Windows 7 HomeP
My questions to you lovely people are as follows, as in all fairness I'm quite new to building computers myself so you'll have to forgive me If I'm asking what seem to be stupid questions.
1. I plan to only replace the CPU, Mobo and RAM and use the existing kit I already own. I have found out recently that when you replace you Mobo with a new one its not just the case of plugging in the existing HDD with XP installed on and booting it up into windows, I will have to format the disk and reinstall the OS, is this correct? Can I do a fresh install of say Windows 7 instead, on the formatted disk?
2. If I format my existing 250GB HDD with the existing OS on it and then plug that into the new mobo, can I install windows 7 for example on that HDD and then simply plug in my 500GB HDD with all my backed up files on and will I then be able to access all my files/work by simply plugging it in and booting into windows? Do both existing HDD's need to be formated, or can I get away with only doing the HDD which holds the OS data for example?
3. Any other suggestions on the spec are also welcome.
I will be mostly using my computer for a bit of Battlefield Bad Company, surfing the web and listening to music on.
Many Thanks Alexander
