I have a HP pavillion laptop and the screen broke. I bought a new screen and fitted it without any issues.

however a couple of days ago i switched it on and smoke came from the bezel and i could see that there was a hole burned through the ribbon.

i dont know whether i caught it when replacing the bezel but anyway it looks as if i need a new ribbon.

I found lots of screen replacement guides but can find anything about how to change a ribbon

anyone have any ideas whether its possible and where i could buy a ribbon

It definitely possible. There are some suppliers that can sort you out with 2nd hand parts but as it may be a competitor, not sure I can mention it. What model is it? Sounds like the screen inverter has gone as I have never known an LED cable to go/burn.

There will be a number on the bottom of the unit (sometimes under the battery) will be something like 5CD48R#ABU

If you could give me that too, can look into it for ya :)

and it's an LED cable?? Blimey lol. Yea, you must have caught it somehow to cause that!

You will be able to buy the replacement LDVS cable easily. Like I say, if you can give me the model I can probably find out the HP part number you need to look on ebay for etc.

As for replacing it, if you can do a screen you can do the cable. Its generally just a case of removing all screws from the bottom casing, lifting the keyboard, removing screws from the palm rest and then you're in. That is unless you have a higher end or ultrabook type model, then it may be a little more difficult.
