On a friends recommendation, I spent a whole 18 of my hard earned pounds on this game. However, much to my dismay, I cannot get it to install

I can install the first CD without problem, but as soon as the installer asks for the second CD, it freezes with no error messages / BSOD's etc. I then have to reboot to clear it, as CTRL + ALT + DEL doesn't work

Does anyone play this game and have any idea why I can't get it to work?

I've been checking out all the Guild Wars forums and some seem to have problems installing with overclocked graphics cards, I have a X1900 XT-X which is running stock, but I was wondering if I can underclock it, to see if it is the card causing the problem? I will also download the latest client tonight and see if that works as I only have the CD's at present.

The rest of the system is Windows XP SP2 (with high priority updates @ 27/3/06), a DFI LP NF4 Ultra-D, X2 3800+ @ 2.6Ghz 1.55v, 2Gb G.Skill HZ Ram 260Mhz @ 3-4-4-8, an Audigy SE sound card and a 74Gb Raptor. The system has been primed for 10 hours without any errors and the load temp is 43 degrees, so I've assumed that it is stable.

Edit: I'm also running Catalyst 6.3

Have you tried downloading the client from their website? You can download the basics and it then downloads everything else when you start the game up.

Could be worth a try...

Thanks for the suggestion.
I'm gonna give that a go when I get home, gonna be annoying downloading each area as you progress though.
Thankfully LLU is in my area and i don't have to rely on BT, so any downloads should be fairly swift!

From reading the forum posts, the game sounds fairly flaky at best.

Not at all, in general the game is very stable :)

It isn't too much of a problem updating everytime you enter a new area, 10secs ish on a reasonable connection!

Enjoy ;)

GW is the only game that i've had in the last year or so thats not given me any issues.

After X3 it was a pleasure to play a game that can run properly, personally i know a game has been coded well when it minimises and maximises from the desktop without problems, too many games crash for no reason whatsoever.

I'm making the assumption that it's a driver error as the installer didn't freeze when I tried to load it on a fresh copy of Windows XP. The installation bombed out 'cos it couldn't detect my 3d video driver.

As soon as I installed the Catalyst 6.3 drivers, the installed continuously freezes when it asks for disc 2.

Does the downloaded version give you the oportunity to create my account etc as I haven't even managed to do that yet.

Well I downloaded the client and it has worked fine :)
Now just need to figure out what to do as I have never played this type of game before

Thanks for all your help!

Fancy joining a guild? :)

click the sig mate ;)

Thanks for the offer, but the only reason i bought the game was 'cos a friend needed extra members for his own guild.

He added me last night but I can't remember what it was called.

What's the aim of the game?

Yeah but Sweetloaf was offering for you to join a good guild ;)

i'm only a noob at it but the object is to level up then find new and eventually elite skills and armour to give you an uber character.

The thing that suprised me the most was the lvl 20 cap, which is pretty easy to hit, WoW took me ages to get to 60. But the good thing is once you hit 20 theres so much more to do, i can't wait to go questing for elite skills and superfy my monk.

Bit stuck at yaks bend at the mo :( have to find people to help me more i think, can't solo at lvl 12.

Group building is an aquired skill.

Try running around adding all and sundry early on.

By Kryta you should be using the chat window to, you know, ask people.

If desperation sets in there's always the Guild Chat. Someone will usually give you a hand. :)

Yeah i do tend to use the chat window occasionally, it just takes so long to get a whole group together. What i've mainly done so far is have a few henchmen then use them to tank. Problem is i tried it in yaks bend with the lvl8 ones, and even with a full team of them i get mashed by the groups of baddies outside, its been quite a shock, before yaks i only came across a few swarms / large groups, but now they're everywhere.
