guitar effects pedals

hi guys,

i've recently bought my first effects pedal, a boss ds1 distortion...

simple question, i keep running out of battery after just a few days, so maybe 1 hour of being on altogether... i am using decent duracel batteries so am i supposed to unplug the leads or something to stop it running out of juice while i'm not using it?

i always make sure the effect is off (i.e. the light is off) when i leave it so i dont really understand

hmmm, i'm interested... so there is a mod that you can either do yourself (perfectly happy with a soldering iron i got a degree in electronic engineering) - or you can go to 1 of 2 guys on harmony central to do it for you, and it will be better due to the components they use?
