Just wondering what people thought about this.. In cheapish setup, what makes the most difference? The Guitar or the Amp?

The reason I ask is that I'm going to be ordering a Guitar and Amp setup with a £400 budget. I can get a good Amp (Probably a Marshall) and a cheaper guitar (Looking at a Vintage Les Paul), or vice versa and wanted to know what my best options are.

Well, a good amp will help it sound great, but that wont matter if the guitar is horrible to play. I had a horrible small Kustom 10watt amp which nothing sounded good through. When I got a Blues Junior amp my Vintage Strat copy sounded reasonably good through it. It's also fine to play. The cheap guitar and more expensive amp certainly sounded a lot better than my Fender American Strat through the old Kustom 10watt.

So you'll probably be fine with a Vintage copy and a better amp. Have the guitar nicely set up and make sure the frets are ok (no sharp edges if you run your fingers along the neck and ok heights). The cheaper Marshall amps do have a rather poor reputation though.

I was thinking of getting the Vintage fom Reagents Guitars and taking up their Premier service which gives it a complete check and set up.
