after a quick bit of guitar advice if you dont mind :)

i'm looking to part ex my odyssey tanglewood electro-acoustic for a yamaha RGX520FZ:

now this is a guitar i've had my eye on for a long time but now the time is right for me, the guitar has been discontinued and as a result is available in a few places at decent sale prices (RRP: £399 - now selling @ around £250)

so my question from you experienced lot, especially with experience in yamaha stuff... should i get this discontinued model or wait for it to be superseeded? my only concern is that this guitar only ever got A1 reviews and it always stated to have the built quality and looks of a top notch custom guitar... my concern is yamaha MIGHT tone down the specs for their next release (dont know what its gonna be called or even when it will be out)

... basically the whole reason i'm going for it is i want to move to the low-fast action delights of a decent electric and get some more rock in my repertois :)

opinions please :)

I say go for it - if it's something you've had your eye on for a while and got good reviews then get it and use the £150 for a couple of pedals or some cash towards a new amp (if you need it).

Buy buy buy.

done :)

bought a roland cube 15 amp to go with it (had also been discontinued so was £39.99 :D)

its ALL about discontinued products today :) - got both for £250 - RRP of £470 :D

luvin it - even none guitarists have to admit the above is one tasty bit of kit :p

you'll love the roland mate, those amps are blinding for their size and price!! outstandingly good, and the guitar looks great - good choice! no point waiting for the next one when this one is such a good deal I say!

sound mate :) - good to hear...

my initial plan was to run the guitar through my roland PM-10 amp but that is the amp specifically for my v-drums and thought i'd be better off with a proper guitar jobby...

i've been "dabbling" (at best) for years and decided to cut the crap, get a minter of a guitar and work through some decent tutorial books instead of just getting tab books of my favourite artists... i've started one recently called "10 minute guitar workout" by David Mead and my understanding of the instrument had quadrupled already in the past week!

can't wait for delivery tomorrow :) - just gotta get some work done cuz once it arrives i'm a gonner :D

Yamaha make great instruments, the only ones they make that suck are their cheap crap. The rest is all good though :P

here are some more pics for those who are interested:

luvly aint it :)

yeah it is set neck is that good?

"Yamaha's first true double-cutaway set neck guitars with features and appointments typically found only on custom guitars."

although, i'm not into the technicalities of it all... what exactly does that mean?

You have 3 major types of neck joint.

(1)Bolt On: Like on pretty much every Fender, the neck is a seperate peice of wood to the body, both are bolted together.

(2) Set Neck: Like on pretty much every Gibson, the neck is a sperate piece of wood to the body, but is glued into a tight joint, no bolts. Supposedly better for sustain, and the size of the joint is a bit smaller, so you can play the higher registers on the fretboard easier.

(3) Neck-thru: The peice of wood that makes up the neck in-fact extends down to the body, and the body is actually two 'wings' of wood glued on either side of this. These guitars are great for sustain, and as there is no neck joint, give very easy access to the higher notes. Check out the Ibanez RGT guitars, with transparent finishes if you want an idea how they work.

Bit of a revival :)

I just ordered one of these this morning and did a search for the rgx520fz to see if anyone had anything to say about them. How do you like it?

I'm getting a Hiscox case and a Roland Cube 20X too and all for £335 :D

hi mate, yeah i absolutely love the guitar :D - can't fault it, excellent build quality, superb sound, tis all good ;)

i also got a roland cube but i bought the 15 which was the version that preceded the 15X - basically the same bit of kit but mine cost me £35 instead of £80, the only difference is an onboard tuning fork...

i also got the guitar at the stunning price of £205 so £240 set me up, didn't require a case so that was all i had to spend... more than happy mate ;) - in with that price i also blagged it to be professionally set up to get the action as low as possible etc... well worth doing ;)

Gotta say if they play as good as they look then you're onto a winner there. It's funny how the studio shot posted originally does it no good eh? Looks like a PRS crossed with an Ibanez and that red looks excellent. Nice buy. :)

There's a couple of places still have them. Mine was from DV247.

Hm, when did you get that? Site's showing it at £280! Quite tempted if it was £240 set up and all though!
