guitar tone help

Hello,

I have a Mexican Strat and a Vox AD15VT, I bought the amp as I thought it would give me a good range of tones being a beginner, but I now find it hard to get a decent sound I like out of it and wonder if i'd be better with a non modelling amp and buy effects pedals. I play mostly 70/80s rock, AC/DC, Springsteen etc.. Any suggestions on what I should start trying out?

Thanks for that, its totally revitalised my playing being able to get a decent sound.. I had always played with gain, volume and master vol pretty much max'ed. I can get quite a good range of sound now

What would you suggest as a move up from the AD15VT?

Just practice really but something that would do for small gigs soon. Their are still some sounds i'd love to have but cant get them. Unforunately I cant explain it as I dont know how too...... I would need to provide a sample of what I want to emulate.

Budget is negotiable really, maybe 400 max?
