Gumtree account compromised

Woken up this morning to get an Email notification my new Ad had gone live for a Mercedes Benz 4x4. 18 mins ago

Quickly contacted gumtree live support and they said yes we can see someone posted on your account,then told me the AD had been removed and my account blocked (for my safety) and that i should make sure all my contact details are correct.

It appears the scammer did not change any of the contact details,My phone number was still there (thought they would at least have changed this) but they did add a secondary email address (which they didn't confirm/activate) so it wouldn't have worked anyway and they didnt remove my email as the primary address. :confused:

What was the point in them doing this anyway then,They failed to change any of my details..what i would like to know,How did they get my password,Its not exactly "123" its quite complex and i dont use the same password for everything.

So yeah beware people,check your accounts make sure everything looks okay.

Use the same password for another site? also people under-estimate the amount of data that was harvested due to things like the heartbleed bug - much of it being just big messy data dumps so the delay before some of it gets exploited can be quite long.

No absolutely not,Different passwords for different sites/accounts.

Lets hope it was something like what you mention,Not had any phone calls or anything this morning anyway,Then again the Ad was only up like 18 mins so. :cool:

I wouldn't worry about it, at worst you'll have a few people contact you asking if you'll take x amount for it, agree to buy but go silent when you try to arrange meeting, or explain that they don't have the cash at the minute but they do have a comparable BMW that you could swap and then try to sell that.
