Hey all,

Selling something on Gumtree worth about £1000, and have someone interested in purchasing it in Ireland and having it posted.

This is usually a red flag and i'd give them the big nope, however they've offered to pay by bank transfer and my understanding that a bank transfer is almost impossible to reverse, is this correct?

As usual, if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is but just wanted to check on how tough bank transfers are to reverse?

Cheers

You can in some circumstances still reverse a bank transfer. Like a hacked account.

Also. This person (if legit) is also taking a massive risk. Who risks 1000?
That would make me worry

Exactly the reason for me asking!

Will just wait for some more replies regarding the reversal but can see me saying no thanks!

So for anyone looking in the future, I have spoken to Natwest (my bank) and AID (According to AIB, the biggest bank in Ireland) and if you send money via Bank Transfer, and want to try and recover it (Either you've sent it to the wrong person or are being scammed):

  1. Contact your bank
  2. They will request the other persons bank to ask the receiver to agree to send the money back
  3. Only if the person who received the money agrees will you get your money back
Confident after doing some due diligence that there's no way for the payment to be reversed.

Feel free to get your "We told you so!" posts ready for when this all goes wrong and I come back crying :p

The buyer would have to have their Gumtree 'range' set to 400 miles.

What is the item?

Don't care but what are you selling?

My PC. Would rather sell without splitting as I don't want random bits and bobs left about and had no bites on the MM.

They've only talked you through the options if the sender is legit. You needed to ask what would happen if an account sent you money, was later found to be fraudulent, as i'm pretty sure in these cases the banks would reverse the transaction without even notifying you.

This is a very valid point.

Well after saying i'd take the bank transfer but want to wait until it's cleared into my account she said she was worried that I could scam her that way by not sending it. So I was either about to be scammed or she was genuine, but we will never know, sorry for the disappointing ending guys!

google, suggests this as the usual scam,

personally, had not succumbed to this variant , on an armchair, someone wanted abroad

If i'm selling anything online and someone mentions Western Union that's me out!

It was the offer of Bank Transfer which had me a bit stumped as I thought they were irreversible!

What mug would buy a 2nd hand system like that from another country. Not shipped by specialist.. you taking to bits and she rebuilding?
That alone stinks a bit.

I don't believe it to be true. Let us know how it went. Good luck.

What buyer would bank transfer 1k to a random seller in another country? Don't fall for the
female bit.

Did I make up the female bit? Tripping balls.

Yeah was female. Wouldn't fall for that, women are the evilest of animals so I wouldn't doubt for a second she could have been a scammer.

She pulled out once I mentioned wanting to see the money cleared and in my bank account before I send, like @Dangerous Dave said.

100% agree - Sending a pc by courier to a different country and getting £1000 by bank transfer to someone you've never met - Scam all the way.

It's either a stolen/hijacked bank account OR this will end up with a claim/threat the item is damaged/not delivered and threats of refunds etc.

It's dead simple - Cash in hand....nothing else.

I would have used the courier we use for work so a claim would have had to be started by myself anyway, but alas, all drama has been avoided as she's pulled out. Sorry, no juicy drama for the hungry wolves of OcUK today :p

Plot twist. Take the grand and keep it :p

The possibility did cross my mind but there's zero chance I could do that and not end up handing myself in at the local police station within half an hour, full of guilt :D

So the question then is, what is it about this PC that they couldn't find in Ireland (or anywhere closer to home, rather than on the farthest side of England)?

Is it massively under priced? Incredibly rare?

If it were some rare watch, or an individual artists work etc then that makes sense. A generic PC? Not so much.

Who knows? Maybe she's heard of my legendary PC building ways? Found me on Facebook and thinks i'm a stud and wants to sniff the PC? Unfortunately, we shall never know :(
