At that resolution you will definitely notice an improvement with a new cpu. At lower resolutions it's more cpu dependant, and at higher resolutions it's more gpu dependant.

I understand you want as many frames as possible but I feel your gpu is wasted at that resolution.

I don't think you'll see a large increase with fps with the new system because you're gaming at low resolution (1280x1024). 6950 is very ideal for that resolution.

I wouldn't try an increase fps above 60 since you're not going to notice the difference since your monitor refresh rate is probably likely to be 60Hz. The most effective upgrade for your system would be an SSD which will make a significant difference.

but with the new system could i increase the resoulution to even 1400x900 and retain decent fps, my monitor is @ 75hz

a 2500k and 6950 is more than capable of playing games at 1400x900.

I'm assuming you have a crt monitor?

Lets get to the bottom of this.

You are after,

CPU
Motherboard
RAM
Cooler

Correct?

What is the budget?

You have all SATA drives? if not you need them.

You have a 64bit OS for the 8GB of RAM? if not 4GB will do.

i have windows 64 ultimate ready to re-instal

Ok, good answers.

Do you want the possible option of Crossfire? or single GFX card setups only?

Do you know if your case takes a ATX sized board? or is the smaller mATX?

would it be worth getting another 6950 ?, or should i just wait till later in the year for a single more powerfull one, im not all up on the dual gpu stuff, although it does intrest me. If the option is only few pounds more il go for it.

Assuming your case does take a ATX board,

This board does support Crossfire+SLI at the better 8X/8X

------------------------

Ignore J.C suggestion, its an older chipset, doesn't support SLI, only does Crossfire at the inferior 16X/4X, its also expensive when both Gigabyte+MSI do better Z77 boards for less.

A more powerful single card is always more preferable to be honest.

But crossfire and sli makes sense as it's sometimes more cost effective to buy a second card, than sell your current card in the future and buy a more powerful card.

At the resolution you're gaming at a second gpu would be wasted.

it's not that i enjoy gaming at that res, its just thats where im getting the performance atm.
I would easily grab a 1080p monitor if i though i could get a steady 60+fps
What would you do ?
