She needs to understand what makes you happy. If you're not happy with such a big thing in life (your car) then it's going to take it's toll on your relationship and you'll end up leaving her.

It's your happiness that counts.

LOL relationship problems based purely around whether someone's car works or not... Those relationships aren't worth saving. (This comment isn't based on the O/P by the way, just the quote! Clearly there's some financial problems here)

To be fair, if you own a £10k car and an £800 bill is going to use up all of your savings then perhaps you have your financial priorities wrong. It's never a good idea to live so close to the edge of your financial stability, especially with young kids involved too.

i'm a little bit perplexed as to why its lasted this short

also confused as to how it went from perfect to completely knackered in 3 weeks. As soon as it started showing signs of playing up it hasnt been driven hard. Its been nursed to and from work so i dont know how its escaled this quick.

But thats beside the point. its definately the clutch and its not in warranty, so only thing to do is replace it.

When you say 'driving it hard', are we talking hard launches off the line etc.?

yes.

I could never imagine my gf giving me such a ridiculous ultimatum.

she may yet calm down.

This only happened a few hours ago. Car is currently a few streets away (least it didnt brake down miles from home) while i decide what to do. She was off out tonight anyway, but the atmosphere when she left was terrible. But shes been nagging me about the running costs for months.

Would you not be better fitting an uprated clutch that can handle the extra torque ? or are they not available due to the limited number of Vectra VXRs.

With the 1.8T/2L T Golfs the uprated clutches are the same price but are designed for more torque than the stock clutch is. With the Golf/Leon/A3/vRS they are a bit hit or miss a stock clutch can do 150k on a remapped car or start slipping as soon as the remap is loaded even with under 10k on the clock. The last thing you want to do it get a new clutch for it to go 5k later.

EDIT just noticed the post two up, I would go for that if you want to keep the remap on.

she needs to cool down, but so do you too really? Yes, i know its modded to 400lb/ft etc but really clutch shouldn't be burning out that fast should it?

I am sure someone told me it was torque that killed a clutch not the power. So if that is true a clutch designed to handle 280lbf/t did well to last that long.

MPG Vectra VXR uprated clutch
MPG uprated heavy-duty five-paddle clutch. Highly recommended for customers upgrading to Stage 2.
£790 fitted

I reckon you could launch all you want with that one...

http://www.midpointgarage.co.uk/Vectra-VXR-tuning-packages.html

its currently undrivable and MPG are in cheshire.

I too had thought this, but its getting it there. And what to do while they need it for 2 days etc.. I mentioned this and got my head bitten off. Was told i was being anal and theres no point fitting uprated parts when iim going to be getting rid of the car.

rated to fit 280 lb/ft continuous.

Obviously it only made 280 lb/ft for most of the top end.

The peak where it made 400 lb/ft was only in about a 1500rpm powerband.

If you do keep the car which seems the most sensible option you probably need to either fit an uprated clutch or have it mapped back to standard power. If running costs matter then the latter is a much safer bet as other things are more likely to fail with increased power.

to be honest i need not to drive it so hard.

Others have done more miles than me with remapped cars and not had issues.

You could get it remapped lower than standard, so it was uber-reliable and even if you drove like a mentalist your tyres would last twice as long :p

You need to sort it out now rather than lose your VXR, get another car (likely out of warranty) and have something go on that and be in worse crap...

There is potential for cost on ANY car, if you cannot reasonably come to a decision over a clutch to fix a car then it's probably best you let her walk.

Been as there isnt any alternative

i think i'm going to have to get the car fixed as cheaply as possible as the £800 is vauxhall dealer rates. Find a cheap backstreet garage and compare fitting only price and fitted with parts price, and compare how much i can get a clutch for using contacts on the vauxhall forums.

Get it done as cheaply as possible and then sit down and tally up how much other cars are going to cost and explain that any car can throw up expensive bills. The only thing that can really be saved on is tyres ...

But then swapping to another car with smaller wheels like a a renault megane for example could throw up all sorts of unexpected costs.

And switching to bmw / audi will just up the cost of servicing and negate any effect of decreased tyre costs by buying one with 17" wheels.

the cheapest and most logical solution is to upgrade to an uprated clutch.
maybe your wife was in a bad mood, and this tipped her over the edge..

it really is false economy to sell the car unless you're getting something crap

i was going to suggest taking her out or buying her something awesome for xmas, but i dunno if splashing out more cash is a good idea at this moment :o

And her dad just runs £500 bangers. Keeps it till it pops, then buys another. She cant fathom a need for anything more expensive other than me being spoilt and wanting nice things that (when they throw up £800 bills) we struggle to pay. We've got the cash, but it will leave us short at christmas. I hoped it would last as the clutch only started slippping about 3 weeks ago. Never expected it to give up this quick.

If its slipping your 80% there already.

Anyway, how involved are you with this woman? children? Joint house? If you don't mind me asking of course.

Explain that to her now, don't wait until the clutch is done. If she can't understand now, £800 lighter is unlikely to soften her position.

She sounds exactly like my ex, in some respects. Thats why she's ex now.

I have a plan and it's as cunning as a fox (the animal variety, not of the [tw] variety)

Sell your 19" alloys for £550, buy some 17" alloys for £350, get the clutch fixed for £500 by an indy.

You keep your car but loose a bit of street cred, the total bill comes to £300 and you'll save £240 on your next set of tyres. Win?
