Heater blower motor £330

WTF, it's a damn motor not a jet turbine full of titanium and CMSX4 Nickel Superalloy turbine blades

Mrlol, it's about time you sorted her out (not like that ;)). She really needs to be learned, and if her logic can beat yours then you might as well drive off a cliff now. You must know her weak spot and how to drill it home so that she has no choice but to admit she was wrong.

I would get comparisons, or just make some up and get the worst possible quotes you can (just make sure she won't check around for cheaper ones). Then show her how cheap the vectra is compared to others say a 3/5 series, S4/RS4, XJR, etc etc.

But of course I don't know your financial situation and that brings along foxs point about are you missing mortgage payments, giving up on hols etc etc. Only you can manage your finances, now manage that broad!

All these people saying it's a Vectra and cheap etc, what a load of tosh.

In the grand scheme of things for the type of car it is, the running costs are ok, but it isn't a vectra, this is to a vectra, what an M5 is to a 5 series.

I would take it to stock and learn to do some bits yourself or get the work done (to get the best money for the car), sell it on and buy a 120bhp family wagon and buy a cheap fun car.

8.5k selling price - £1000 for the cluch etc = £7500 in your pocket.
5k on a nice Mondeo or what not amd a grand for consumables.

£1500 to have some fun, get DOC on your insurance and your away.

ST24 Mondeo
MX-5
MR2

Something old and fun with a good owners club and when something goes wrong fix it yourself or go to a tech day and the bonus is you still have a car to get to work, your wife is still happy and you can have some fun without worrying.

He could do that, but now I must ask what does she do to savemoney, or does she buy useless things for the house, loads of clothes, shoes, makeup when she doesn't need it etc!

Compromise is essential but then again you are both adults and have your own money and wants in life.

You can only use DOC cover on cars you dont own, and AFAIK they need to be insured already by someone else. I know there's been big discussions about it here - I don't want to derail a thread by starting one of those again. Either way, you can't use DOC cover like that

Not really, for the performance it offers, it IS cheap.

Thats not what DOC is for.

For the performace it offers, yes it is. It doesn't mean it's cheap though.

You could say your car is cheap for the luxury and style it offers, but you could spend less, a lot less.

in regards to DOC, no it's not, but your legally insured and it would be fun car so less of an issue.

In the context of this thread it is - nothing else anything like it will be noticeably cheaper this side of a normal Vectra/Mondeo.

DOC only covers you on cars you dont own. Yes, YOU dont own. You still own it even when you pretend its your wifes.

This is the same wife that goes Bananas when a consumable item fails on a car. How is she going to be sold on the 'two cars' idea?

she doesnt possess a driving license and a 2nd car would most definately be seen as being extravagant !!

We've been together over 9 years now, have a joint mortgage (and have had for the last 5 years now) and a child of 6. Our relationship isnt in trouble, we've managed to always reach a compromise on everything and this is the first time in 9 years that ive been given an ultimatum like this.

i'm not going to find anything cheaper so this is likely to go one of 2 ways

either 1) i end up with a ford focus diesel econo borebox

or 2) i have to make some nominal concession to bring down the running costs of the car. Maybe see if i can get a good price for my 19s and swap for somebody with 18s.

Dont know if there is one near you, but have a look at Mr Clutch to see if there is one local, and if there is then phone them up, they ended up around £120 cheaper than the local indy for my clutch, and it came with a 2 year 20,000 mile warranty aswell

Mine will go soon, I just got a quote and its literally half what my local garage would do it for, thanks sooooooo much :D

isnt a 2004 Accord just as likely to throw up random large unexpected bills though ?

yes it saves £200 a year on tax, and maybe £150 per pair of tyres, but all that saving could be wiped out by one big unexpected bill.

£350 could easily come from water pump failure or whatever

eg

http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/index.htm?md=665

Problems with ABS and VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) modules from age about 4 years old. Cost £1,600 to rerplace. But can be refurbished by www.bba-reman.com for around £300

Not that it will, but if it does, its just wiped out all my savings and negated the point in me changing ...

You would be pretty unlucky for that to happen and after another quick scan you can pick up some nice examples quite cheaply

yeah but if it did .. who gets it in the neck for buying another expensive car ? when "after all the picasso never needed anything like this"

is what id get.

Any car could throw a huge bill though.

exactly

its either bangernomics or keep the vectra.

I would still say its less likely to happen in a fairly basic honda engine compared to a high powered vauxhall/vxr
