Guys don't hate me for this!

No it was not. This is the first time in history that the newest console gen has been considerably less powerful than it's PC counterparts.

If we say considerably less powerful than high-end PC counterparts, then I have to agree. But the PS4 is pretty much bang on the specs of a mid-range PC.

I wouldn't say the PS4 is underpowered.

Yeah it was, Xbox 360 had triple core PowerPC with R520 based GPU (similar to x1800).

PS3 had single core, dual threaded PowerPC cpu with 7 SPEs and a cut down 7800GTX GPU that had fixed pixel and vertex shaders.

Both this gens consoles are running 8 core CPUs with 7xxx series based GPUs, Xbox One is around 7770/7790 and PS4 is around 7850 level of performance which is what a midrange PC is thesedays, not sure how that's "considerably less".

Not sure if I agree with the OP, as I do have a few modified console controllers that work on the PC. Playstation for example. Wireless jobby, uses a pick-up stick similar to a wireless mouse and takes up 1 USB slot, Windows 8 picked it up fine without drivers. Think you can get Xbox controllers for the PC as well. Then there's the modded Megadrive controller as well which is perfectly fine for PC games if you only need 3-6 buttons.

That is true, but the fact that the PC is already more expensive, adding (unnecessary) expenses keeps tipping the price point in favour of the consoles.

Well if you can't afford it then don't complain. You don't hear me complain about people driving Ferrari's. It's life and you get what you pay for. ;)

When you consider games released for the consoles cost double that of PC games, overall cost is really equivalent for consoles and the PC.

You can't say a console is useless.

I'm not.

I think that the experience of gaming on the PC is better than the experience of playing games on a console because the performance and therefore playability is superior, the controls are customisable and the game itself can be modded eg. Skyrim.

But I concede that a console is required as well if you are a big gamer because many games are console exclusive.

Nothing to do with not being able to afford it, PC elitism is a joke.

Wow your PC cost £1000+, congrats, well done....

I have a half decent PC and I still find console gaming the superior experience, not everything is about how many pees and frames you can run at. I have quad core with crossfire gpus, 16GB of ram, SSD, etc..

I'd take a dozen GTAs and The Last of Us running at an average frame rate in the 20s than most of the crap that comes out on the PC.

LoL ! Seems like I touched a nerve. I'm not dissing consoles. They're all perfectly fine if you enjoy a mediocre gaming experience. But PC's do it so much better and do a lot more too as we all know.

If you enjoy a non-unified UI, separate launchers and ways of loading games, friends lists that don't carry across those services, bad DRM, needing to get the latest graphics drivers to get games running properly, the abomination of Windows 8.1.

Remind me again which is the mediocre experience?

A 7850 vs a 780ti / 290x?

That is a HUGE difference.

I'm sorry, have you forgotten already ? Consoles.

The simple fact is, there's nothing and I do mean nothing, a console can do that a PC can't do better. There's also a list longer than I care to mention of things a PC can do that consoles can't. Didn't you know that ? :D

Wow no way, a PC that costs double or triple and runs an OS built to handle different types of applications, does things better than a £320-350 GAMING machine.

Top of the range PCs FTW! Also, PlayStations FTW! :D (lol wats an Xbone?! :D)

Seriously, I try to answer the PC vs Console question every time a new lot of consoles comes out but I'm never very successful.

:D Just gonna end up buying both(upgrading PC and buying next gen) anyway so now I just roll with it :D

On these occasions me and my bank balance, however, typically disagree. One day we'll be on the same page... One day...

Afraid so.

Like I said earlier, if you can't afford it, don't whinge, it just makes you look jealous and sad. If you're happy playing console stuff at low res and 30 fps, crack on my friend. Coming onto a PC forum and trying feebly to argue that consoles are better is a bit like Hitler going to Israel and saying, 'Sorry guys, my bad.'

with a PC you can say 'I BUILT THAT, I GAVE IT LIFE, I AM GOD'

with a PS4 you can say 'this is my console there are many like it but this one is mine............. without my console I am nothing..'

Where did I say I can't afford it?

I have a PC that is better than yours and a PS4.

Just don't like elitist morons who act all superior because their £1000 gaming PC is faster than a £350 console.

I find the overall experience far superior on a console as you would expect it is a dedicated gaming machine. Yeah you can play games at higher resolution and framerate on a PC that costs more but I don't enjoy using Windows 8 and waiting for AMD to **** out a driver to play the latest game or I have to disable crossfire and play with one GPU, or having to use Steam, Origin and Uplay, each with their own friends lists, just to play games when I can sit on the couch and have my friends in a party and be able to watch them stream from their console and join them directly without having to load any extra apps.

Mediocre gaming experience?

Lol. Graphics and fps do not make an experience you know.

Can a PC run Infamous Second Son or The Last of Us better than the PS4?

Good for you. Then why are you contradicting yourself by stating that your cheap console out performs your expensive PC. ?

Where did you get £1000 from ? Not that I care to tell, but I didn't spend that little on my PC, but I will be buying a GTX780 next month as part of a planned upgrade, about £400, but I don't mind. Funny how one part of my PC is worth more than your entire console and yet you still think your gaming experience is better. What cave are you living in ?

Sold my ps3 with all the accessorises and haven't looked back. Why? Well I just never used it, played GTA on it and the experience was nasty.

My 2 gaming rigs one an Alienware m17x r4 has been a big source of entertainment and hasn't skipped a beat.
