GX22GB6400DC Labelled Wrong?

I just got an extra 2 sticks of GX22GB6400DC.

One stick is labelled PC2-6400, as I would expect. The other is labelled PC2-3400. But the rest of the labelling on each stick is identical (both say GX22GB6400DC. :confused:

Vista x64 reports 4GB of RAM. Is this just a labelling error ... I don't think PC2-3400 even exists?

CPU-Z reports SPD:

Slot #1: PC2-5300 (333 MHz) :eek: :confused:
Slot #2: PC2-6400 (400 MHz)
Slot #3: PC2-5300 (333 MHz) :eek: :confused:
Slot #4: PC2-6400 (400 MHz)

I bought 2 x 1GB of 6400 initially and then a further 2 x 1GB of the same ... so I guess OC has duped me and I have to send some back? I don't know too much about memory ... is this going to cause me problems if I keep it (looking to overclock my e6600 soon).

Could CPU-Z be wrong?
 
I think 'duped' is a bit strong. If they came in a retail pack then it's probably a manufacturer error (although having actually visited a site where they pack RAM, I can't see how that's possible in a matched pair of DDR2 situation) or more likely, someone in the back-office of the retailer has been 'playing' with a couple of sets of RAM for some reason and not put the packets back together properly.

I did ask the question of one retailer some time ago where they were claiming to put RAM that definitely clocked to a certain speed in their pre-built machines. I asked the question "If the RAM doesn't clock does it get put back into general stock?" - the real answer to which is, of course, "Yes", but the person answering claimed that it all clocked very well.

Based on those numbers, you have 1 set of older memory and one set of newer stuff. The older memory was programmed as 5300 in the SPD. Both are PC2-6400.

Set the memory in the BIOS to 2.1v and also alter the timings to 4-4-4-12. You have to manually configure the BIOS to run the memory at its rated settings.

Has been covered in a few posts on here if you can find them.

Even after manually setting the BIOS to the rated speeds and voltage CPU-Z and all other programs that read the SPD chip directly will still show 1 set as 5300. It may be the newer set that is 5300, you don't really know where they came from in the 'pile' of chips that are kept in stock by OCuk or their suppliers.

So should I send it back to OC and request some with reports SPD 6400? In other words, have I got what I paid for or not? Excuse my ignorance.

No. Just configure the rated settings in the BIOS. I own a set that also says 5300 and run perfectly at the rated 6400 speeds. There was a note inside the box to this effect and saying that the memory needed to be configured to run at the rated speeds. I've done that and not had a problem.

Been away for a few days and just had time to do this. I have the DS4 board and did as follows:

- Changed RAM Timings to 4 4 4 12 (from 5 5 5 15 which defaulted in BIOS)

- Changed DDR2 Overvolt to +0.300V

After saving and booting, CPU-Z still reports SPD as 5300 :confused:

EDIT: and I didn't get any note with the RAM

CPU-Z will always say 5300 in its SPD page because that is what is physically written into the SPD chip. The actual memory speed is listed on the memory page.
