GX60 Hitman Edition - When?

im not sure in the point of this (yet) is this the latest APU to arrive ? Kaveri ?

i know its a cheaper than intel solution, but the cpu is moderate in performance compared with the intel (not a fan boy) and the IGP is used when ? this thing even with a faster next gen CPU in the APU would still largely bottleneck an AMD 7970m right ?

also i thought switching between IGP and dedicated was a weak spot for AMD and Nvidia? given a lot of people will want to run linux side by side with windows its an important thing to remember. I know you can manually choose which gpu you want... but then, this thing isnt designed to be portable .. well only in the sense that the next place you take it to has to have a power outlet.

So, why not go for the intel and get the right performance level from the 7970m and allow for VM's to run smoother too , after all this is a DTR system

It's about balancing performance individuals' requirement I guess. For around the same price, you either get a slow AMD A-10 CPU with a 7970M which will make mince of 1920 res (but frame rate will be limited by CPU in lots of situation); on the other hand you get a fast Intel i7 3630QM 4 cores 8 threads CPU, but you'd only get a GT650M/660M...which quite frankly is not really fast enough for turning up eye candy for 1920 res. So at sub £1000 gaming laptop, it is either pork or beef, and if you want to enjoy both, the only way is to pay up more money...

well for the purposes of gaming, gaming should be possible. As clear as that. but i do hear what your saying. the intel cpu typically adds £160 - £170 , So thats £1000 V £1170 but lets call it £1200 .. sure £200 is a lot but so is £1,000. You may aswell use the CPU and the GPU properly and save up that bit more (as an aside the msi chassis is bulky and plastic, wait for the refresh)

again, if somehow it was possible to crossfire or offload dynamically with the APU + 7970m then for £1k the performance would be beyond that of a 680m and more like a desktop 680 but they dont so the potential is wasted.

i think the best APU's will come towards the end of this year with the new A10-6xxx + crossfired with an 8870 (i think) gpu on a solid mid range £700 laptop

and just to emphasize my point:

30fps APU , 80FPS intel cpu

It's 49fps vs 71fps from that video for arkham asylum for the i7-3720qm vs a10-4600m:confused:. It's largely dependent upon the game - cpu intensive games fare badly compared to the intel chips, whilst in gpu limited games the gap is much smaller.

It's a shame AMD don't make another APU more akin to intels with more die devoted to cpu performance, as the on-die gpu of the a10 isn't utilised in games in the gx60, and more cpu power would be more useful. Jarred Walton doesn't understand the fact it's a budget gaming laptop, which is why he's comparing it to an i7-3720. The competitors of the gx60 in that price-range usually have i7-3610 or i7-3630 and 650/660gtx.

The gx60 isn't fantastically portable (3.5kg!), but battery life when not running the 7970m is pretty good.

there is a cheaper medion barebones with a 670m thats roughly the same price and comes with the i7-3630qm, its mostly the same so maybe worth a punt if you like the chassis, the increase in cpu ofsets the slow gpu somewhat and nvidia drivers are better on mobile devices ATM
