H100 New build pc - cpu overtemp

I`ve just finished assembly of my new PC build using the Corsair H100 - on startup its saying `CPU over temperature error` and going into bios it`s showing 70-80 degrees C. This is just from very first power up no overclocking profiles applied..

At first i had the dual h100 fans plugged into the pump/cpu-unit as per the instructions - but they would spin and after a moment stop and cpu overtemp and cpu fan errors would throw..

So i plugged the two fans into the CPU FAN and CPU OPT FAN headers on the motherboard. That seemed to keep them running, but yet again i got the cpu over temperature error..

I`m not sure if the H100 unit is faulty, not seated correctly, or what. The light is coming on it, but i can`t feel any vibration from it although one pipe is cold and one is hot - ?

Also very worried about damaging the 3930K as it`s expensive to replace..

Also make sure your not resting on diodes on MB not all boards have enough clearance, you think your tight onto CPU but in fact resting on diodes

This too, some boards have capacitors and the likes too close to the socket area and require the pump block to be rotated 90 degree's in order to sit correctly.

Thanks for the help guys..

It`s really wierd, what i`ve done is after some research held the button on the cooler for a few secs to reset it, then tried plugging the h100 fans back into the unit ( rather than the mobo headers ), and everything seems to be miraculously working :/

The cpu temp in the bios is saying up to 25 degrees C now is that about right for startup temps?

Next problem i`m having is the MSi GTX560Ti driver software is saying it can`t find compatible hardware..

Not sure if this is an X79/2011 issue.. time to do some googling. It`s also not recognising my belkin wireless dongle which is a pain..

Final issue i`m having is it`s only saying 24/25 gig ram instead of the full 32 gig :(

Full specs are:

i7 3930K
Corsair H100 Cooler
Asus P9X79 Pro Mobo
32Gb Gskill RipjawZ 1866 Ram
Corsair TX650 PSU (non-modular)
Corsair Obsidian 650D Case
MSi GTX560Ti TwinFrozrII OC

Any help much appreciated this is my first self-build..

Doing that defeats the point of being able to change the fan speed, the fans need to be plugged into itself for it to work properly

What i meant was -

Standard H100 installation, you plug its fan plugs into the H100, and then the unit has a seperate plug which goes into the Mobo CPU Fan header..

This didn`t work for me and i had to plug the H100 fans directly into the CPU Fan and CPU Opt headers.. ie so the mobo was controlling them not the H100..

But as i say it overheat anyway and through some miracle got it working by reverting to original setup and resetting the h100 by holding down the button..

Are you running the correct version of Windows 7

While the maximum RAM limit for 32-bit Windows 7 editions is 4GB, when it comes to the 64-bit editions, the amount of memory that the OS can address depends on which edition you are running.

Here are the upper RAM limits for the different editions of Windows 7:

Starter: 8GB
Home Basic: 8GB
Home Premium: 16GB
Professional: 192GB
Enterprise: 192GB
Ultimate: 192GB

Found this on the asus forum, might be worth trying some of the mentioned solutions: http://rog.asus.com/forum/showthrea...4gb-at-1600-mhz-but-32gb-at-1333mhz-WTH/page2

Thanks for the link!

Have you fixed the issue with the H100? It could be you left the sticker on the back? :o

There was a plastic cover over it but was removed so just the thermal paste on :) If 25 degrees c is ok for startup cpu temp then yeh it`s fixed..

Thanks Davefran but yeh it`s Win7 Pro 64Bit..

I`ve just had a look at the DRAM SPD Information thing in the Asus bios, and it says sticks C1 + C2 are `Abnormal` - all other sticks coming up ok.. So i`m guessing either 2 bad sticks, bad mobo, or need to mess with bios config to get them recognised :/ Clueless about the bios tbh..

it does, should be a 3 pin fan header + 4 pin molex. The molex provides the pump with a constant 12v while the fan header is just a tacho cable for keeping an eye on pump speed.

....you sure?

The only cable I have coming off the H100 (other than the 2 fan cables) is plugged into the PSU....not the motherboard

Yep it sticks out of the top of the main cpu part of the H100 as seen here ( the cable splits at the end into a molex for the psu and the pin for the cpu fan header:

The little pins actually pushed out of the plastic protector/cover on the molex when trying to connect it to the psu plug, what i had to do was just plug the two bare pins in to the sockets.. I had similar fitting difficulties with the power plugs for the GTX560 card, not sure if the Corsair TX650 connections are a bit on the tight side..

Had a muck around with ram sticks, it won`t post with a single stick in the C1 slot. Tried enabling XMP and messing around a bit to see if that`s help but it`s still just basically saying it doesn`t like C1 and C2 slots..

Yeah both those cables you described are plugged into my PSU, nothing on my H100 is plugged into the motherboard

Over tightening the cooling block/pump can warp the motherboard and affect the RAM slots/CPU socket.

Try loosening the 4 securing screws a turn and see what happens.

You obviously don't want to loosen them too far otherwise the cooler block won't make proper contact with the CPU.

Thanks Surveyor i`ll try that, although will be keeping a close eye on temps really precarious about the whole cpu/cooler seating procedure as i have little experience with it..
