Afternoon,

Put me new-ish rig together on weekend, its an i7 4790K, Asus Maximus Gene VII, G-skill 2400mhz Ram, Corsair 650w PSU, Sapphire 290X GPU, Corsair H100i cooler

So all put together and running, first wanted to get the RAM working at its spec'd speed before OC'ing the CPU so leaving all CPU voltages at auto (besides ram) I run IBT and AIDA64 and I was seeing 75-80 degrees on hottest core in IBT and 70 in AIDA and I thought damn that hot considering the H100i is supposed to be good!

I then done a mild overclock to 4.6ghz with a 1.23v core and in IBT was hitting 90-95 degrees and 80-85 in AIDA

I stopped stressing it straight away when I seen those temps, I removed the H100i and then used some IC Diamond TIM and temps have dropped a few degrees but to me they are still very hot!

I installed the Corsair LINK software and can see the pump is running fine etc so not sure what's going on, the radiator barely gets warm when stress testing and I expected it to be much warmer so wondering if I have a defective H100i?

Anyone shed any light on it or things that I can test?

Never heard of it but will look into it.

At the end of the day will make no difference if temps are getting that high, something is amiss and I don't have a big enough air-cooler to try for comparison at the moment, im sure it hitting 80 degrees stock on a dual rad all in one water cooler is not right at all...

Temps that high on a 4790k are the norm, doesn't matter what you cool them with. Especially if you run stress test programs like p95. 80c at stock is actually one if the lower ones I've seen. All 3 of mine were in the 90's at stock.

Ah right, its like that with the 4790K's is it, damn, assume its the crappy TIM that Intel are using on top the die and only way to get decent temps is to take some brave pills and de-lid? :(

well I find those temps high. I use the nzxt kraken x61 and my temps are 26C idle and never above 40C load @ stock speed 4.0ghz and unit is running in silent mode so 25% fan speed (840rpm)

your temps seem high. is the case well ventilated? if u don't have an OEM air cooler do you have the stock intel cooler to compare temps? maybe your temp sensors on motherboard are defective? anyway if your temps get too high I would think your motherboard would shut it down.

my 2 cents

They run cool enough in normal tasks, its once you try anything that uses AVX instructions, that's when temps start to soar. Stuff like prime95 or Intel burn test being two such programs.

My 4790k was also hitting 85ish in P95 and AIDA.

I have mine clocked to 4.7Ghz on a H105, got the cooler in a push/pull setup and idle temps are now 25-30 and in games like BF4 never go above 70.

You can have a stable OC without running a stress test that will torture your CPU.

As already said check out ASUS Real Bench. Much more helpful for a daily OC imo.

What programs you been using to push/stress the CPU? My Idle is fine around the 35 degree mark at 4.7ghz and last night I done some testing, I managed to drop voltage to 1.19v and get so-far a stable 4.7ghz from that and temps I am seeing are:
  • IBT - peaking on hottest core at 90 degrees
  • AIDA64 - 80 degrees
  • ROG Realbench - 70 degrees
  • 15 mins on BF4 - 55 degrees (only 25% load on CPU though)
Its never hit TJ Max and if it goes much above 90 degrees on stressing I have stopped it, all this is with side of case off and fans high on the H100i.

Temp sensors are on the CPU cores themselves so cant see them being faulty, I have a stock tiny intel cooler but that prob wouldn't cool the CPU @ stock 4.4ghz turbo on IBT lol
