Hi Guys,

I hope this threads in the right part of the forum. I got the 7600k mainly for the stock core speeds it offered, I got a Asus Prime-pro H270 mobo as this was cheaper than the x270 at the time.

however is it now possible to overclock my CPU with the H270 chipset or would I need a mobo with the X270 chipset?

BCLK overclocking. but not recommended if you don't know what you're doing, as BCLK affects multiple components.[/QUOTE

Thanks Tamzzy the reason this issue came about is, I didn't realise back when I bought my Kabylake 7600k that it didn't come with a CPU cooler so I bought a coolmaster 212x. I then changed my GPU from a 460gtx to a 980ti and changed my monitor from a 19" 900p Samsung 75Hz to an Asus 4k 60hz.

I now need to get all the juice I can out of the system to keep that 60 FPS steady at 1440p and 4k without buying a 1080TI. Plus the Coolmaster 212x isn't pushed at all which makes me wonder why water cooling is needed in pc's. (that's a discussion for another day).

I think I'll steer away from 3rd party apps as I can overclock the graphics card and RAM as there are safe guards in place. But I'm happy to say I'm still an Amateur when it comes to overclocking in general.

Last question regarding this topic, is the performance increase going to be worth the £120 cost of to replace my H270 with a new z270 motherboard? or is it worth putting that money towards a new Graphics card down the line?

@Robin Gregg 4k60 is pretty demanding on the GPU more than the CPU (that being said, the CPU needs to be fast enough to keep the GPU fed)
7600k is a 4 core 4 thread processor, whilst currently just about sufficient, isn't really recommended for 4k gaming.
you're looking at a 7700k (at minimum really) with a 1080ti
and even then, for blockbuster AAA gaming titles, this will still struggle to maintain 4k60 at ultra settings.
so, TBH, with a 7600k at stock speeds with a 980ti, you're better off playing at 1440p
I don't think I could recommend you swapping out to a Z270 board to overclock that 7600k - that's a waste of money, as the ONLY upgrade path you have is a 7700k (4c8t processor).
IMO better to suck it up now and wait to upgrade (seeing as currently intel 8 series CPUs are available - up to a 6c12t processor).
And also, the i5 8400, is as good as the 7700k, so it's pointless spending money for old tech (as you need both the CPU and motherboard).

(I've a 3770k + 1080ti and IMO, 4k gaming isn't all that's made out to be - so much so that I sold my 28" 4k monitor for a bigger 32" 1440p monitor)

You've basically summed up what I'm seeing;

Mass Effect Andromida 44-60FPS @1440p 35 fps in the badly written parts of settlements.
Witcher 3 60FPS @1440p occasional drop but nothing major
Rise of the Tomb Raider 40-60FPS @k occasional drop to 30 fps
Mass Effect 1,2 and 3 60FPS @4k No drops
Battlefleet gothic 60FPS @4k no drops
Any Telltale game E.g The walking dead 60FPS @4k no drops

Just wanted to add I can't play Mass effect Andromida without screen tearing or Tomb raider in 4K

I Must admit I did initially notice the HZ change from 75 @ 900p to 60 @4k or 1440p but I don't think now I could go back to 1080p.

I think I got lucky with my monitor though, as long as I have the OS and game resolution set to 1440p I see no visual problems when downscaling the resolution from the Native 4k. The only noticeable difference is when gaming at 4k its ultra sharp. I now plug my xbox controller into the pc just to play at 1440P for me I can see a noticeable difference in quality. I'm not a major FPS player anymore so I get away with not having a 120HZ monitor.

But I'm in agreement my limit is 1440P for high end intensive games.

ultra sharp low quality textures... :D oxymoron
better 1440p ultra than 4k med

I've been converted to a pc snob, I wont play on anything less than ultra, I made sure the graphics were on ultra for both 1440p and 4k :p. But the games I get no drops on aren't very as intensive which is why I get away with it. I don't think I've tried the settings on medium @4k as I didn't want to take the dive. I'd like to assume I'd get 60FPS.

The 980TI is overclocked to;
+305 memory
+80CPU

I used to overclock to but used to get the occasional lockup;
+350 Memory
+104 CPU

As per my other post my Cooling was no where near adequate, if even doing anything at all. Once my last fan turns up ill probably overclock back to the higher numbers on 980TI.

I'd highly recommend the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Ti Twin Frozr 6G, shes a lil beast. :D
