Just thought I'd post a pic of my latest build.. Bit more practice, I suppose, until I make my water-cooled beast in a few months.

** Mod edit **

He won't make the switch to Windows permanently as he's been using Macs for 20 years.

Here's a picture.. What you can't see is the mess of wires in the back that still need tidying up. Got it up and running W8.1. Need to do the hackintosh part now.

Will take a darker glamour shot with a proper camera later when the wiring is sorted. Anyone got any tips with what to do to tidy up the messy VGA power cables?

No offence but that isn't anything like an iMac. Might be cheaper and more powerful but a iMac it isn't. Won't be silent, won't have the same build quality and won't have AppleCare. Also, what monitor is that going to be linked to?

I've been a Mac user since 1990 and much as I do like a nice gaming PC from time to time they're not the same. Luckily my son couldn't convince me to ever move away from my Macs! :p

What will happen when OS X 10.10 comes out, for example? I've tried Hackinstoshes in the past, for fun and always found issues. Still good luck and I hope your dad enjoys his new computer.

I'm trying to understand why you'd gimp up a computer like that with OSX, and I'm drawing a blank. Ah well, each to their own and all that.

Where did he say it was like a iMac?

Good luck with the hackintosh stuff, didn't seem as simple as I would have thought when I looked into it!

While true, it also doesn't have a laptop-grade GPU, it doesn't have the computer built into the screen causing heat discolouring issues over time (this was the problem with his old iMac). AppleCare is a post-purchase extra warranty, which he's never bought before.

He's bought an EIZO 27" 2560x1440 IPS to pair with it.
Yeah, he'll have to wait a little while to use 10.10, most likely. But he's never been that keen to upgrade his OS immediately. However rampagedev (hackintosh specialist) creates SSDTs for the motherboard, which enhances upgrade compatibility.

Well it's either an iMac, Mac Pro or Mac Mini. Seeing as if somebody has the money for a Mac Pro they wouldn't bother with a Hackintosh I assumed iMac as that's the most popular Apple desktop.

The GPU in the new iMac is pretty good if you're not a gamer. I assume your dad being a Mac user for 20 years isn't a gamer! I do like how the GPU in OSX is used to assist programs. Works a treat if you do video work like I do.

Heat discolouring? How old was his old iMac? That was on the first generation Intel ones and Apple fixed that out of warranty (they fixed my wife's MacBook when this happened) and AppleCare can be extended but is included for the first year. Apple replaced the faulty screen FOC six months out a warranty. That's one good reason for paying the extra.

Anyhow good luck and I hope your father enjoys it. Out of curiosity, how much did this cost versus the iMac?

I'm going to have to check out the Hackintosh scene to see how things have progressed. I won't build one, I have the luxury of being able to afford the real deal, but I am curious. Was a tough slog to get one fully working last time I tried.

2007/8 model. One of the first few aluminium iMacs. So he was well due an upgrade.

Well, vs. the top end iMac which starts at £1599 (no SSD for that price though, haha) this was certainly more expensive. Probably the final total was around £1700, maybe slightly more because of the screen.

P.s. Could a mod explain why my post was edited? Thanks.
