H50 users, which way should the fan blow?

Hi,
I've hooked up a H50 to my i7 920, the problem is i've been getting bad temps around 67-70 on full load on 4 cores with 3.2Ghz. Some people are saying its bad some are saying its ok.. but i think its bad.

Im using the stock one that came with the H50 and its mounted in a 800D case as well.
Just getting opinions on what way should the fan blow? Out of the case or into the case? Just now i changed it so that the fan blows out of the case, there was a lot of dust as well don't know if that was causing bad temps because of the fan blowing into the case.
Any ideas? :D

Corsair intended for the fans to be intaking air from outside the case and across the radiator. They claim that using cooler air from outside the case will yield better cooling performance. Usually it doesn't make much of a difference. What does make a difference is the fans and how you have set up the H50. Also I would suggest high end thermal paste as well just to keep those temperatures down.
 
I wouldn't say 67-70 is bad on full load at all - especially if that's with Prime95 or IBT. Mine hits almost 90c with those programs but in Bad Company 2, temps never really go above 70c. Mine is running at a vcore of 1.3v and overclocked to 4Ghz though...

These i7's do run hot and some just run hotter than others. Personally mine are pulling air into the case as recommended by Corsair but just experiment for yourself to find the best configuration.
 
I actually purchased an overclocked bundle from OCUK which has been returned twice due to the motherboard packing up and then an unstable overclock, which was put down to a dodgy CPU so that was replaced. Ironically, the old CPU ran about 10c cooler than this one I have now. I've reseated the H50 several times so I'm pretty sure it's just the CPU that's running hot & that some CPUs just run hotter than others. Overall, from the reviews I've read the H50 seems to be as good as the top end air coolers.
 
Well i've mounted the fan at the top of the case now.. with the air blowing into the radiator, so far so good... temps are around 65 on full load with a 3.2 overclock.

Idle is better as well around 37 on all cores.... i guess i gotta get a new fan, so that i can do a push/pull config.
Will do research on whats the best :p unless someones got any ideas.
 
Yea i've been looking at the Akasa Apache's.. seem good, btw im new to all of this... i have a Gigabyte UD7 mobo, but i have no more space on the motherboard for anymore fans.. How can i add more if i want to? :rolleyes:
 
Well, crikey, this has been discussed at length in the main H50 thread, and comes up very regularly. In short, there's no right or wrong way, and although Corsair recommend using it as an intake, they also admit that this won't get the best temps in every case setup. You need to try it yourself to find out I think, as it will depend on a large number of factors. Personally, I've found that it makes no difference to my temperatures, so have mounted it as an exhaust to retain the cases natural airflow direction.

As said! I discovered that my Lian Li case top exhaust fan ran the PC 5Degrees cooler running it as an intake.

Well, I would say it should blow the way which yields the best temps but I'm no expert on this. :rolleyes:


Seriously, the forum is full of people getting better results using both ways, it really depends on the case, the fans, the layout etc. You won't know for sure until you test it out for yourself.

I tried both methods push / pull taking in cool air from the back worked best for me mainly because it took nearly 20c from the northbridge temps. My case Lian Li PC-B25FB has 2 140mm fans at the top of the case taking all the warm air out.

FYI, our included thermal paste is excellent (Shin Etsu) and it also does not need curing time.

LOL....sorta funny but not true. And, you can't do a DIY build for anywhere near the same $$$, with the same ease of installation, etc.

I saw this thread but the answer has already been posted along with references to that HUGE thread going here on the H50. There is no right or wrong way to do it really. Any user that has doubts should test the possible configurations in their system and compare results. That's the best way to guarantee that you have the best setup.
 
I wish they had made the hoses 2 inchs longer then it would make it easyer to use the rad as a front intake fan. At the moment I use it as an exhaust setup and getting good temps ie 56c on full load at 4ghz.
 
Yes, the included TIM is good. The only downside I observed with the Shin-Etsu stuff was that it's really difficult to completely clean off, even with IPA. Once I got my H50 clean and used some AS5, temperatures improved quite a lot compared to the previous coating of AS5 which I think was on top of a layer of Shin Etsu that hadn't been removed by a 5 min clean.
