I'm about to build my I5 2500k, (P67) machine and had hoped to "revive" my aging Compaq which I will be using as a backup/second computer, with a new mid-range mobo, processor and RAM but, it looks like the new boards are incompatible with Compaq/HP cases or will be problematic or not worth the hassle so, I will probably have to look at an alternative.

I might as well build a basic second machine at the same time based on maybe a i5 23/2400 (H67 mobo) and just use the onboard gfx chip as I won't be playing games on the machine - it will be used solely for Photoshop image editing and accounts so, I thought perhaps an 1155 SB based mobo with the H67 chipset would be adequate.

The question is:
Do you think the onboard i5 23/2400 processor gfx will be sufficient for dealing with Photoshop or, do you think I would still need a modest gfx card for this machine?
I really don't want spend more than I have to on this machine (as I want to spend more of my budget on the i5 2500k machine) - I also don't intend to OC it as I will be using it for accounts and just need it to be absolutely stable and reliable rather than super-fast but at the same time, can still handle editing images in Photoshop without struggling!

Any thoughts or suggestions?

What kind of photoshop work are we talking here? Basic happy snaps stuff no problem. But if you are doing professional studio work then I would say no.

Hmmm difficult to say not knowing how Gfx intensive PS is but apparantly the onboard GPU is like an ati5450

So pretty good in a HTPC sense but dunno for you

Well my old Athlon 64 3400+ and 2 gigs of RAM manages it without a card - it's a bit slow with lots of files open such as when editing wedding shots but, it still gets the job done!

I would expect the 2400 to be a fair bit faster surely, even without a gfx card?
I'm not expecting miracles but PS isn't the most intensive gfx user!

Not exactly quick then LOL
But even the 5450 is faster than what I've been managing on!
The problem is that I am changing over from neg film to digital...hence I've been doing mostly neg film and only modest amounts of digital but, now that I am making the change, I also need to up the computer power!

I really need two - one fast and one for steady work. I can always give the onboard gfx a try and if they are too slow, I can add a card....I just don't want to over-stretch my budget right now as I have an awful lot of equipment to buy this year. The 2500k machine is also for when I have time for a bit of fun!
